This Week on The Curmudgeon..."Problems With Our Politics "

Copperopolis, CA...I was in one of those philosophical discussions over a beer at the Pub with a friend that I enjoy bantering with because he’s terribly bright but mentally unstable . . . kind of like the best of both worlds. We have a lot of those in Copper . . . and it scares me that I understand their thought process. He made a comment that we had problems with out politics . . . I countered with the comment that we did not have problems with our politics we instead have politics in our problems. He thought about that and quickly agreed.....

Our system of government was meant to be a government by the people, for the people and of the people. But look at what we have today . . . politicians run on platforms talking about problem solving by pointing fingers at the incumbents or each other screaming about their shortfalls and seemingly lack of interest in “our” real everyday lives with failed problem solving. Trust me . . . they do not live in our world!

Then one of these newbies gets elected and its business as usual . . . nothing changes. Why you ask . . . I mean you do ask right??? I ask and get long drawn out rambling explanations that start off with “Well you see you just don’t understand . . . the problem we have is . . . “

And then my eyes glaze over as more and more comes out of the politician’s mouth covering every aspect of what the problem is and why there is no quick fix . . . ? And then I think . . . wasn’t it just a couple of months ago when you were campaigning you had the solution for this problem? Yeah . . . wasn’t that your platform? But now it can’t be fixed???

Now being a fairly bright person and wanting to make sure I understand “problem solving” I went to Wikipedia for the following explanation of the phrase; Problem solving

Every theoretical problem asks for an answer or solution. Trying to find a solution to a problem is known as problem solving. That is, a problem is a gap between an actual and desired situation. The time it takes to solve a problem is a way of measuring complexity. Many problems have no discovered solution and are therefore classified as an open problem.

So if I understand this explanation above . . . we are electing and paying politicians to represent us in government expecting them to be the “problem solvers” . . . because during the campaign they said they were “problem solvers” but this problem solving process is so complex that “many problems have no discovered solution and are therefore classified as an open problem.”

I guess my expectations for these poor elected officials is just too high . . . here I was thinking the solution was to elect and pay politicians to solve our problems when in fact its just too complex and these problems are now classified as open problems to be left for the next batch of elected problem solvers to discuss and reclassify . . .

Now I understand why the Obama’s needed nine vacations last year at taxpayers expense . . . what a stressful life that must be dealing with all these open problems . . . and then there’s the freebies, jobs for family, political dinners and parties at taxpayers expense, free healthcare nothing like what we get and full retirement after a couple of years in office with book sales and speaking tours that pay hundreds of thousands a year. It’s tough . . .

Like I said . . . we don’t have problems with our politics . . . we have politics in our problems and apparently these problems are not fixable . . . maybe we should only pay the politicians for results . . . you know kind of like the way you and I get paid???

I know . . . just sit here and be quiet . . .
