Chase Through The Mother Lode Ends in Arrest ~By Patrick Works
10:30 PM Sunday January 23, 2011, Jackass Hill, Highway 49 near Melones Bridge, Tuolumne County. Highway Patrol units from Tuoloumne County took up the chase coming to them from the Calaveras County side of the Lake Melones Bridge late tonight, as a slow speed chase involving 3 agencies came to a peaceful conclusion...
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Department had joined the pursuit, in support of the CHP officers who's initial engagement with the suspect driver commenced tonight's long chase. Action on the road was joined by the Angels Camp Police Dept. K-9 unit, in hopes that if the final stop of the suspect brought about a belligerent scene, safety might be served by the presence of the police dog.
A very drunk man led the procession across the bridge on flat tires, as earlier police attempts to stop the suspect were only able to slow him down. Spike strips laid down in the road did their work in the end however, as a few miles of slow pursuit on Highway 49 finally resulted a halt of the suspect vehicle driving on it's bare wheels.
Medical units arrived on the scene, but soon returned to their stations, as the evenings police action concluded without injury. All responding parties were relieved that the long chase, and all the cooperative efforts, brought about a quiet end to a busy night. The suspect is safely in custody.
