With only 8 wrestlers on the roster, Bret Harte also earned the third team place trophy.
“This group of wrestlers, who I have been calling ‘the core’ have continued to prove that dedication and hard work pays off,” stated Bret Harte Head Coach Zach Abernathy. “And with every tournament they are growing stronger and stronger.”
This is the second weekend in-a-row that Homuth, Murillo, Nanik, and Sherrow have gone undefeated facing wrestlers that have represented some of the strongest teams in the Section.
“Neither Will C. Wood nor Calaveras are teams to take lightly,” said Abernathy. “They have strength through-out their lineups and are able to roster a full varsity team.”
Will C. Wood finished first in the tournament followed by Calaveras in second.
Guiding the Bullfrogs to the medal stand were five pins spread throughout their roster.
“Of course pins are an extremely satisfying way to win a match,” said Abernathy. “But, it’s not the only measure of a good wrestler. When a wrestler is truly evenly matched a win by one or two points is also a good win.”
Amongst those who won by pin on Saturday was Senior 160lbs Christopher Almadova. “Almadova is a third year wrestler who is working hard to becoming a pivotal member of this team,” said Abernathy. “In the past his time on the mat has been on-and-off, but over the past couple of weeks his techniques and athleticism has begun to dominate his opponents.”
The two matchups of the day was a preview of the up-and-coming Mother Lode League showdown when senior 140lbs Nanik and junior 152lbs Sherrow stepped on the mat against their Calaveras rivals.
“Nanik and Brown (Sophomore Justin Brown) had seen each other wrestler several times,” stated Abernathy. “But, this is the first time they had ever faced off. Watching is one thing, but actually competing is another.”
The first two two-minute periods went scoreless between the cross-county foes. It will be Nanik’s choice opening the third period, knowing that he had to score, he chose down. This opportunity to score proved fruitful for Nanik as he was able to earn an escape point which was followed by a two-point takedown. The match will end 4-0 when Nanik was awarded a penalty point due to Browns second caution after jumping prior to the whistle.
“Brown is a good wrestler,” said Abernathy. “Nanik has been working longer, and possibly harder, and is knowledge and skill prevailed.”
The second Redskin – Bullfrog match up for 1st place was in the 152lbs match between Sherrow and Robby Weeber. Once again, this match went scoreless into the third period. Sherrow also choosing down in the third period will score first with an escape followed by a two-point takedown. As hard fought as this match was, neither wrestler will be able to change the 3-0 score when time ran out.
“We didn’t know much about Weeber before this match,” said Abernathy. “Tanner simply had to step on the mat and wrestle his best regardless of what he was facing.”
Bret Harte and Calaveras will face off in their final MLL dual on Wednesday, February 2 at Bret Harte.
The four first place medalists at the David Mendoza Tournament will travel to the College of Marin on Monday, January 17 to compete in the Northern California ‘The Dream’ Tournament.

JV BULLFROGS PLACED 2ND IN JACKSCON
JUNIOR ALEX MIRAMONTES AWARDED TOURNAMENT MVP
The Bret Harte JV participated in the Jackson Lions’ Club Wrestling Tournament a dual tournament in which they placed 2nd behind host school Argonaut High School by three points (Argonaut 138 -- Bret Harte 135).
“If we had just one more pin, or a couple of wins from some of the kids that could not be with us over the weekend, we would have come in first place,” stated Bret Harte JV Coach Dustin Alkema. “This tournament was a true testament of the advantage of having numbers and hard working kids.”
“It was a good placing for a young team with little experience,” stated Alkema. “Even though this was a varsity tournament, all the teams had a mix of varsity and JV wrestlers competing.”
The Tournament awarded two MVP awards, both going to upper weight wrestlers. One of the heavyweights won four matches and managed to only wrestle for two total minutes. 189lbs Junior Alex Miramontes was award the second Tournament MVP for his four pins on the day. Miramontes had pinned three wrestlers in his pool as well as the wrestler for the Championship. All of Miramontes pins were in the first round. Miramenotes had beat out Senior Peter Parla of Argonaut for the MVP.
“I felt that Parla proved to be one of the better wrestlers at the tournament,” stated Alkema. “And if it were not for a tech instead of a pin in one of his matches, Parla would probably have won it over Alex.”
Senior 112lbs Nikko Reyes also earned first place medals. “Nikko was also a close contender for the MVP award,” said Alkema. “He had four pins, but one of them came late in the second round.
“We did real good at Argonaut,” said Alkema. “There were many seconds and thirds.”
