Gas Siphoning Leads to Concealed Weapons Charge
Tuolumne, CA...Yesterday around 5:00 am Dep. Mike Pershall was dispatched to the area of Westside on Tuolumne Rd. where Tribal Security had detained two subjects who had possibly been siphoning gas from parked cars. Security said they heard noises in the brush near the fence that separates Westside from Summerville High School. Later they saw a man walk out of the brush near the fence, carrying a plastic container. He walked across Tuolumne Rd. to a parked SUV and appeared to be pouring gas into the fuel spout. When Deputy Pershall arrived he identified the man as 49 year old Robert Hagen, of Oakhurst, and a passenger as Susan Huntington, 51, also of Oakhurst. When questioned about the gas, Hagen said he’d gotten a ride to and from a gas station and he had walked from the area of the fence because it was a short cut....
Deputy Ben Christiansen drove to Summerville High School and checked the area but was unable to find any evidence of a gas theft. Hagen and Huntington were released at that time.
Later at around 10:00 in the morning, Deputy Joe Morton was dispatched to Summerville High School regarding a vandalism and theft. He contacted a staff member and was shown a school vehicle that had the gas filler tube cut and about five gallons of gas missing. He collected a security video that showed a man entering the campus from the east end carrying a container.
At about 10:30 that night, Deputy Pershall was back on duty and happened to be patrolling in the Black Oak Casino parking lot when he saw Hagen’s SUV parked there. He had already seen the video provided by the high school. He contacted Hagen and patted him down for weapons because Hagen had a folding knife on him during the last contact. This time Hagen had a fixed blade knife concealed in a pocket. Deputy Pershall told Hagen he had a video of the gas theft and Hagen admitted he was guilty. Hagen was arrested and booked at County Jail on charges of Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Theft, and Vandalism. Huntington was released at the scene.
