Angels Camp City Council Hops Into The New Year!~by Patrick Works

Angels Camp, CA....Tonight’s meeting of the Angels Camp City Council dealt, in part, with an agenda regarding business, business development plans for the future of our city and our region; many strongly held opinions were heard. On the agenda tonight was a council resolution that might offer a measure of control by the City of Angels over possible proposals by developers to our community. Some members of the Angels Camp City Council did their best to draw firm outlines around plans commercial real estate developers might have for the City of Angels Camp.....

A rather large crowd of local residents came to present their view that limits the City Council might make would discourage development and the growth that our community needs.

City Council members have proposed a threshold of permissible square footage that might be submitted, beyond which approval by the City of Angels Camp would be required.

Currently there is no legal restriction regarding the size of any commercial development within the City of Angels Camp.

Local residents came to tonight’s meeting in great numbers, most of whom were emphatic in their disdain for limits to any proposed development, and generally hostile to what they seem to understand as the City of Angels Camp putting roadblocks in the way of those who hold promise of both jobs and sales tax revenue that might enable our community to rebuild.

The phrase “big box” came and went many times during this meeting, though it was agreed in the end that the phrase “big box” has become a pejorative description of plans by major retailers, and is unhelpful.

Hopes by many that anchor development by any one of a number of national or international businesses might find a home here in Angels Camp, and all the revenue that might bring to the City of Angels and to local families, drove the emotions on both sides of the debate tonight.

Angels Camp City Council members were divided on this matter.

While all present expressed their desire to see business grow; the measure as written was voted down; due in no small part to the detail regarding the size of businesses proposed as described above.

Tonight the Angels Camp City Council also seated a new member. Stuart Raggio was met by supporters, friends, and family as the new year brought a new council membership to order.

Mr. Raggio got right to work as the business of the Angels Camp City Council was urgent and the meeting a busy one.

Not only did Stuart Raggio find a new seat, but the council voted in a new Mayor for the City of Angels Camp.

Jack Boeding now presides over the City Council meetings for the next year.

Taking the gavel for the first time, Mr. Boeding found that while a gavel might me a ceremonial instrument of authority, it is also a rather forceful device; and a bit louder than a shout (or a shot) in a closed room.
