Letter to the Editor~by David K. Singer

Dear Editor: On June 8th of this year, as I was watching the election results on television, my phone began to ring around 9:00pm. With only 5% of the precincts counted, the local newspapers were already calling to ask who I was going to endorse for District 5 Supervisor in the November runoff. I appreciate the sensitivity in allowing me time to deal with the disappointment. But in thinking about it, I concluded there was no need to rush into any kind of decision. After all, there was still a lot of time to “campaign”. There was 5 more months for the two remaining candidates to demonstrate their understanding of the issues, what ideas each have for operating the county with declining financial resources, and without .....

compromising service levels, how to bring new business and local jobs to the area, and their positions on various local concerns. There was time for the candidates to distinguish themselves from each other. And perhaps most importantly, more time to evaluate their character for truthfulness, veracity, and credibility.
I know from speaking with several individuals before the primary, and those that told me after why they had voted for me, these people had taken the time to study the candidates. They had attended the candidates’ nights, or watched the interviews on ThePinetree.net, and visited our respective websites to familiarize themselves with our positions on the issues. These people made a concerted effort to educate themselves and measure the candidates to determine who they wanted to represent them in District 5. I am confident that these people, the 22% of District 5 constituents that voted for me, will do the same this time around also. They certainly don’t need to take their political cues from me. So, this is not an endorsement of either candidate.
Like many of you I have been following the series of events involving Supervisor Thomas and Darren Spellman over the last several months, and especially in the past few weeks, with utter amazement. It would be amusing if there wasn’t so much at stake. Both sides have their die hard supporters that can’t be swayed. But for the rest of you, even if you are leaning towards one of the candidates, before making such an important decision on which one should represent the most populated district in Calaveras County, please answer the following questions:

1.Which candidate has demonstrated to you over the past 8-months to have a better understanding of the top issues facing the County, and the government process?
2.Which candidate has done a better job articulating not only what needs to be done, but also presenting some viable plans or methods for achieving the result?
3.Which candidate do you believe has conducted himself in a more dignified manner befitting a Supervisor during this campaign?
4.Based on your observations of the two candidate’s interactions with the Board of Supervisors, which is more likely to have the respect and cooperation from the other Supervisors when it comes to gaining their support on an important District 5 issue?
5.Which candidate appears to you to have been the most open, honest and forthright in response to direct inquiries?
6.Which candidate are you least likely to regret having voted for six months from now?
