Everyone Invited to October 24th Mind Matters Open House
Mind Matters, the Murphys based non-profit clinic that helps individuals and families affected by autism spectrum disorders and other forms of learning disabilities, is inviting everyone to a festive Open House to be held Sunday, October 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. at its new facility, 150 Big Trees Rd. adjacent to the Murphys Post Office.....
“We want the members of our community to get to know the services we have to offer, to meet our highly trained staff, and to tour our new offices and program rooms,” states Dr. Ryan Thompson, the clinic’s CEO and Medical Director. “We also want to share our techniques with the medical professionals and educators who deal with children and adults who experience the disorders we treat.”
The open house will be a family oriented celebration. There will be tasty snacks and beverages, balloons, a bounce house for children, and informal tours of the facilities. Music will be provided by Colurblinde, a band made up of four Bret Harte High School students led by Jared Thompson, the son of the clinic’s founders.
Dr. Thompson and the clinic staff will be on hand to describe the clinic’s diverse programs and to answer questions.
Mind Matters has an interesting history:
When Dr. Ryan Thompson’s son, Mitch, was diagnosed with autism in 200l, he and his wife Kim experienced the anxiety that all parents in a similar situation go through. Even though he had been practicing medicine for many years, he was not equipped to deal with the complex issues that accompany such a diagnosis.
In seeking help, the parents soon discovered there were virtually no services available in Amador, Calaveras, and Tuolumne counties to meet the many challenges they faced as a family with an autistic child. They were left with feelings of hopelessness and frustration.
They resolved to not only discover ways they could help Mitch, and his family, but to establish a clinic to make it possible for others to benefit from their efforts. Out of this resolve was born Mind Matters, a multidisciplinary treatment center to meet the needs of families struggling with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD), and Learning Disabilities.
Families can now turn to the clinic’s highly trained professional staff for diagnosis and treatment, learning assessments and interventions, social skills development, counseling, education and support. The results have been remarkable.
Because Mind Matters is a non-profit clinic it is able to offer its programs at greatly reduced prices. It also seeks charitable contributions and grants to help defray the cost for families that need assistance. For further information, contact Mind Matters at 728-2184 or www.mindmattersclinic.org
