Chinook Salmon Study May Lower Lake Tulloch Levels~by Susan Larson Tri-Dam Project
Copperopolis, CA...The Oakdale and South San Joaquin Irrigation Districts are planning to participate in an important flow study involving the main tributaries of the San Joaquin River. These studies are designed to evaluate the impacts and benefits of additional flows on water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and migrating fall run Chinook salmon. These studies will include the Stanislaus River, which would involve changes to the water levels within Tulloch Reservoir. Water levels within Tulloch Reservoir are expected to be different than the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) schedule recently distributed to area residents, agencies and other interested parties. This study is currently expected to begin on September 17th and be completed by September 30th,...
The Districts have jointly requested that the USBR release their stored water out of New Melones Reservoir to provide the additional water necessary to facilitate this study and to ensure that water levels within the reservoir remain at the levels shown on the previously distributed schedule. To date, the USBR has refused to honor the request of the Districts. As a result of the USBR's action, water levels within Tulloch Reservoir will begin to be lowered once the additional water releases on the Stanislaus River commence on September 17th. Should the USBR continue to choose not to supplement the study flows with the District’s water from New Melones Reservoir, Tulloch Reservoir levels are expected to go below elevation 500’ after September 24th. Based on current projections, Tulloch reservoir is expected to reach elevation 486’ by September 30th. Once the flow studies have been completed, the reservoir level should be returned to approximate elevation 501’, which is the normal winter level. This notification is provided in accordance with the FERC license requirements so that all interested parties can secure their facilities, including docks, ramps, vessels and other watercraft so that these facilities can be protected from any possible damage and so that all potential users of the reservoir are properly apprised of reservoir levels.
