Meet Frog's Tooth Vineyards...Calaveras Winegrape Alliance Feature By Jan Hovey
Murphys, CA...In the winter of 1999 Frog’s Tooth Vineyards began its life as a tadpole when Gary Grant purchased 67 acres of land on Hunt Road in the Salt Springs Valley of Calaveras County. Ten acres of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Petite Sirah and Grenache were planted in 2003, and in 2005 Frog’s Tooth entered young froghood when they crushed their first fruit. “I initially wanted to just be a farmer, but the grapes were producing award-winning wines by other wineries, so we decided to make our own label,” said Gary...

Frog’s Tooth started producing 750 cases in 2005 and is currently at 3,500 cases per year. “We’re hoping to produce 5,000 in 2011,” Larry Aderman, co-owner told me.
In 2007 Frog’s Tooth opened its tasting room at 380 S. Main St., Suite 5, in Murphys. This year they expanded square footage to include the suite next door, which is utilized for special events. “We’ve hosted birthday parties and pre-wedding tastings in the new room,” Larry said.
“All of our wines are grown in the Sierra Foothills, except for the Torrontes,” adds Larry. And that particular wine won Gold and Best in Class at this year’s California State Fair Wine Competition! Look for Frog’s Tooth on the August cover of D’Vine Magazine.
Frog’s Tooth Vineyards continues its expansion with a winemaking facility completed on the ranch this year. The wines are available at local grocery stores and restaurants, and Larry now has the wines available in Sacramento, Modesto and San Jose. Visit online at www.frogstooth.com, call the tasting room at 728-2700, or better yet, visit the tasting room, open seven days a week.
One small step for man – one giant leap for Frog’s Tooth!
