Local Boy Wesley Sagewalker Heads to Harvard ~ By, Charity Maness

Eighteen year old Wesley Sagewalker had one of the biggest decisions of his life to make this summer as he poured over acceptance letters from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford, to name a few. Though, this young man with a bright smile and manners rare to his age group, knew his whole life he would be heading to college, where and what to study were more of a concern. After weeks of careful consideration, weighing options such as; personal connection, financial aid, location, alumni, and availability of certain sports teams, Wesley chose Harvard....

Growing up in a small community just outside of Angels Camp Wesley was taught early on that life is a learning experience; each day can bring new bit of information, something new and exciting to learn. With supportive parents and a lifestyle that promoted education he was bound for excellence at a young age. Family vacations were always utilized as a learning adventure, by the time he figured out what his parents were up to, it had become second nature to learn something new everywhere he went. Though many of the family vacations were little jaunts, some were to foreign lands. His favorite trip, the one that inspired him the most, was the family trip to Greece. He would stand at the base of ruins 3000 years old amazed at that they were “still standing….geometrically perfect…engineered better than some buildings we have now.” With a broad smile and firm voice he said, “I couldn’t have asked for more supportive parents.”

Attending Avery Middle School as a young teen he tells of Mr. Martin, his sixth grade history teacher, and the lasting impression his instruction left on him. His love for math was evident by middle school, taking algebra from yet another teacher he raved about, Mr. Guzzetta, allowing him to take Geometry his freshman year, putting him on the Mathematical fast track through high school. In high school he enjoyed a number of sports; basketball (which he concedes was not his strong point), soccer and tennis (both he Captained his Senior year), and cross country. Again he found teachers that were supportive and made his educational experience exciting, like Mr. Priddy, his History teacher. As sports run in his blood, he expressed an interest in the crew team at Harvard, quickly receiving an email from the crew coach establishing communication.

Heading to Harvard to major in Economics with an international relations interest, Wesley’s goal is to one day start his own corporation that will build desalinization plants in countries such as Africa, Chile, etc, for use in agriculture. To “help those countries have sustainable large scale agriculture” and/or “to expand existing agriculture.” Pointing out that though some countries like Dubai and Australia already have such plants, the challenge is to make it affordable. “Dubai’s desalinization plant is the model of the future.” He said with awe. At a cost of 15 billion US dollars one can easily see the drawback to building such a facility, yet that facility can put out up to 600 million gallons of desalinated water per day and enough power to power New York City.

With a large scholarship awarded to Wesley from the Ophir Bear Mountain Masonic Lodge, he will be able to spend more time his first two years studying and less time working to pay his share of the educational costs.

Though he knew he always wanted to be at a school on the East coast, feeling they have their thumb on the pulse of the international economic trends and needs, he will sorely miss his friends Derek, Tyler, and Jackson, all three headed off to various prestigious Universities spreading them “to the four winds.”

Harvard is just a first step for Wesley, he is hoping to head on to Said Business school University of Oxford after receiving his BA from Harvard.
