Bret Harte Receives ‘Most Outstanding Ag program’ in the State of California~by Charity Maness
On Wednesday evening, June 23, 2010, at the annual California Ag Teacher’s Conference and Award ceremony in San Luis Obispo, Bret Harte High School was presented with the award for ‘Most Outstanding Ag Program with 2 to 3 teachers.’ There are approximately 167* high schools in the state that qualify under the 2-3 ag teacher heading, but Bret Harte High School came away with the highest honor....
With Ag teacher’s Roy Beck (with Bret Harte 25 years) and Carrie Phillips (with Bret Harte 8 years) creating such a winning team; the students under their tutelage receive nothing but the best in agricultural education with a wide range curriculum. For many years BH has offered expanded Ag courses culminating in a phenomenal hands-on educational program. It seems as if Bret Harte’s Ag program is destined to make its mark on the Ag world. First a National poultry win this last school year for FFA and now Most Outstanding Ag Program for 2010. Makes one wonder…what’s next for our Ag team?
With approximately 240 youth enrolled in the Ag program at Bret Harte it is by far the highest attended program within the brick and mortar walls of Bret Harte. (FYI; 240 students is equal to 1/3 of the total student population attending Bret Harte.) The youth from within FFA and Ag have gone on to Chico, Cal Poly, and U.C. Davis to name a few. Some specialize in what the majority of us consider to be ag related fields of study ie; animal husbandry, livestock management, etc., while others venture into the chemistry side of food preparation for livestock, or artificial insemination, or the effects livestock have on the global community. This isn’t your grandpa’s ag class folks.
Additional note: 98% of 2010 graduating seniors from the Bret Harte Ag program went on to higher education in the ag field or to work within the industry. Well done Mr. Beck and Ms. Phillips.
