Bret Harte Celebrates Academic and Artistic Achievements~by Local Author, Charity Maness
Angels Camp, CA....On Friday, May 28th, the staff and students of Bret Harte High School held their annual Celebration of Academic and Artistic Achievement in the main quad of the campus; this year’s title, “Bret Harte Beach Party: sun, surf, success.” This activity filled day has been going on now for many years, bringing the students, faculty, and families together for awards, music, competitions, food, sidewalk art and camaraderie. This day was about success; the staff at Bret Harte seemed to embrace the knowledge that success can be measured by many different standards. So today was their day to acknowledge the youth in their school for their accomplishments, tenacity, and desire to learn. The awards were presented to students who showed incentive, drive, passion, and skill....

As awards were handed out the kids cheered and the staff joked. There were smiles, tears, and many, many hugs. It was easy to see that the staff not only teaches the children we’ve entrusted them with, but that they truly seem to embrace each child’s individualism and spirit.
After awards were handed out the quad came alive with music, laughter, and chatter…all at once. The quad was filled with numerous activities for kids and staff alike. The center of attention was a 60’ long inflatable obstacle course complete with tunnels, climbing wall, and slides. There were also inflatable boxing rings and an inflatable medieval pole fighting ring. The staff added another element to the already fun idea of boxing; if you chose, you could ‘box’ with a teacher. Though this sounds dangerous, it was not. The boxers donned inflated boxing gloves the size of a small car tire and wore protective head gear. Upon entering the bouncy ring they were surrounded by netting and more inflated fencing. The only thing getting hurt was the grass beneath the ring.
Cordoned off from the activity of the main quad was the sidewalk chalk art display. The artwork was stunning! The amount of talent these kids possess is remarkable. From a VanGoghesque starry night impression, to a coat of arms from Mexico the art work was nothing short of breathtaking. Cartoons, sayings, reflective thoughts put into drawings, portraits, and landscapes are but a few of the varieties of art that was presented.
(Bret Harte has a total population of 628 students; 156 of those students are Seniors that will be graduating next Friday night.)
