Candidate's Statements
Mary Boblet

"I want to thank GABA for this opportunity to introduce myself and my campaign to be your next District 3 supervisor. I am reaching out to small business, community organizations and our local economy and am pleased to see GABA's network is strong and vibrant. One thing is clear in 2009: it’s no longer business as usual for Calaveras County’s government, businesses and communities. In fact, I think we’ve realized it will never be business as usual again. 2010 is the year District III residents will have a clear choice between a candidate mired in business as usual and a candidate with the skills and experience to guide, facilitate, and spur us on the road to recovery.

I am running for Supervisor because I believe putting an end to the economic damage we’ve suffered these last few years is our top priority. Calaveras County’s economy quite simply makes it possible for us to raise our standard of living, nurture our families and ourselves, live healthy lives, and enjoy our retirement, our hobbies and interests. It’s all interconnected and when the economy fails, we feel it everywhere. It will take a concerted effort to put the problems we're experiencing in our past. That is why I am in these community organizations, along with folks like yourselves, actively working on projects promoting a local economy: White Pines Park, Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail, Courtwright-Emerson Ball Park, Calaveras County Economic Summit, Rural Broadband taskforce, Vallecito Music Boosters, EPPOC, Amador-Calaveras Consensus Group and more. As your former Parks and Recreation Commissioner, and originator of our prop 40 projects here in District 3, it was my job to promote healthy activities and facilities for residents, while also supporting our local economy.

It is "deeds, not words" that are needed now, more than ever.

My husband Darwin, and my sons Tristan and Colin, live with me in Hathaway Pines, going on four years now. Our boys attend Avery Middle School. Academically they are both Principal's Honor Roll students, while also participating in cross country, track and music. My husband and I both come to Calaveras with high-tech backgrounds. Darwin worked at Hewlett-Packard as a material scientist and I worked for two companies, one wildly successful startup and one very traditional manufacturer as a program manager and facilitator, among others.

Join me on the trail! I run every morning in the Stanislaus River canyon at 9am, rain or shine. I will be happy to answer your questions and share my positions with you following our run. If trail walking is your thing, I will be happy to spend time doing that too. The slope is minimal and the terrain is packed earth and safe, so there's every reason to get outside to support your health and the economic health of your community. Contact me at info@bobletforsupervisor.com or 795-7818 or visit my website - www.bobletforsupervisor.com."

Merita Callaway

"It is at challenging economic times like this, we realize the effects it has on the private sector and makes us truly appreciate job opportunities that improve the quality of life for our community. It is also the time that GABA and business organizations throughout the county are integral to this mission. Their insights and involvement keep economic considerations at the front of county policy. The agenda for economic recovery is going to be based on the relationship between the private sector and local and state government. A strong economy provides the funding for essential government services. Over the years I have been and will always be available to discuss and support ideas and intercede as appropriate to respond to the concerns of District 3 businesses and residents.

As a fiscal conservative with a responsible voting record:

1. Supported the county selling its debit and receiving payment in full with no continued liability
2. Do not support taxpayers subsidizing individual projects or services
3. Evaluate the impact of fees and policies on business and development, and the economic consequence
4. Support reasonable growth and planning which maintains and enhances property value
5. Set constituent priorities with taxpayer dollars.

As the Board representative on the Debit Advisory Committee and the Treasury Oversight Committee, I have been actively involved in the structure of financial policy. Examples are: the investment policy, the review of capital projects through bonds, need to control spending, efficient use of Tobacco Settlement funds, etc. There is not an easy remedy to our economic climate, but working together we can take steps forward to recovery; we shop and hire local, however small; local businesses have the ability to bid on State and Federal funded projects; and utilize the local preference when possible. "

Bill McManus

"My name is Bill McManus. I am 59 years old and live in Hanford Hill. My current, full time job is being a candidate for the office of Supervisor, District 3. Here is a quick overview of where I came from and how I arrived at this point in my life.

I was born and raised in Stockton. I attended local schools there and graduated from A.A. Stagg High School in 1968. During my teenage years, I was busy with school, traveling to Calaveras County with my buddy to seek out elusive trout, was very active in DeMolay, and worked after school and on weekends. I continued my education at San Joaquin Delta College, majoring in Computer Science and graduated, with Honors, in 1970. Soon after receiving my A.A. Degree in Computer Science, I volunteered for military service and in 1974 was Honorably Discharged from the United States Air Force. I bought my first home a year later in Manteca, then the following year I purchased another home in Stockton. I started my first business in Stockton designing and installing custom computer systems and serviced many clients in Calaveras county. In the early 80’s, I purchased my first of several homes in Murphys and some 10 or 12 years ago moved to my present home in Hanford Hill. I have started and run three, very successful, businesses in my life, had a brief and successful five year career with a major U.S. Corporation, and I currently am a General Contractor and owner of The Deck Doctor.

I have two wonderful children. My son, Mack, is 13 and attends Avery Middle School, where he is currently Student Body President. My daughter, Jackie, is a sophomore at Bret Harte High School. Both are 4.0 students and crackerjack basketball players. Both of them are an inspiration to me because of their efforts to achieve excellence in all aspects of their lives. I’m pleased to say that they, like me, are strong Conservatives.

I am seeking the office of Supervisor to change the attitude of county government. I am ‘Pro Jobs’ and understand that only with more business can those jobs be created. I don’t believe that going to Washington DC, with tin cup in hand, begging for Federal dollars is the way to build and sustain a vital business base in this area. Neither do I believe that local government is the answer. It is my opinion that local government has failed us and discouraged new business investment in our community. I am opposed to excessive, county mandated ‘fees’ and consider them an additional TAX in disguise. I am running to change that."
