Candidate Interview with District 3 Supervisor Challenger Bill McManus

Arnold, CA...This is the first in our series of Candidate interviews for this year's Elections. These are not meant to be confrontational but hopefully let the Candidates show the voters who they are and why they are running. Our first interview this year is with Republican Supervisor Candidate , Bill McManus. This race will be a hotly contested one as many believe it has the potential to change the voting balance on the board. The Hanford Hill resident is seeking to replace long serving and current Supervisor Chair, Merita Callaway. The 59 year old Hanford Hill resident is ready and raring to go. You may have even seen the campaign signs that have sprung up along Hwy 4 the last few days. The interview and Candidate's Statement are enclosed...

"My name is Bill McManus. I am 59 years old and live in Hanford Hill. My current, full time job is being a candidate for the office of Supervisor, District 3. Here is a quick overview of where I came from and how I arrived at this point in my life.

I was born and raised in Stockton. I attended local schools there and graduated from A.A. Stagg High School in 1968. During my teenage years, I was busy with school, traveling to Calaveras County with my buddy to seek out elusive trout, was very active in DeMolay, and worked after school and on weekends. I continued my education at San Joaquin Delta College, majoring in Computer Science and graduated, with Honors, in 1970. Soon after receiving my A.A. Degree in Computer Science, I volunteered for military service and in 1974 was Honorably Discharged from the United States Air Force. I bought my first home a year later in Manteca, then the following year I purchased another home in Stockton. I started my first business in Stockton designing and installing custom computer systems and serviced many clients in Calaveras county. In the early 80’s, I purchased my first of several homes in Murphys and some 10 or 12 years ago moved to my present home in Hanford Hill. I have started and run three, very successful, businesses in my life, had a brief and successful five year career with a major U.S. Corporation, and I currently am a General Contractor and owner of The Deck Doctor.

I have two wonderful children. My son, Mack, is 13 and attends Avery Middle School, where he is currently Student Body President. My daughter, Jackie, is a sophomore at Bret Harte High School. Both are 4.0 students and crackerjack basketball players. Both of them are an inspiration to me because of their efforts to achieve excellence in all aspects of their lives. I’m pleased to say that they, like me, are strong Conservatives.

I am seeking the office of Supervisor to change the attitude of county government. I am ‘Pro Jobs’ and understand that only with more business can those jobs be created. I don’t believe that going to Washington DC, with tin cup in hand, begging for Federal dollars is the way to build and sustain a vital business base in this area. Neither do I believe that local government is the answer. It is my opinion that local government has failed us and discouraged new business investment in our community. I am opposed to excessive, county mandated ‘fees’ and consider them an additional TAX in disguise. I am running to change that."

(Editorial Note) We are running the challenger interviews first and allowing the incumbents to follow. This format will stay consistent in races where there is an incumbent. In wide open races it will be first taped, first aired.. Open Comments are not enabled on these interviews but will be on the debates etc...
