The Whiskerino has a fine historic tradition in Calaveras County. Although the whiskerino dates back to the 1940s it was revitalized in the 1950’s and held for the next forty years. In 1955 Bob Petithome, Angels Camp resident, won the award for best full beard. He says the best part of the event was seeing “all the slick chins” try to grow beards. The event marked the month long Jubilee celebration. Originally held at the Gun Club adjacent to the Fairgrounds, men and women donned their best gold rush attire. However the biggest draw was the actual whisker competitions.
The first Whiskerino of the 21st century will host the traditional competitions of days gone by. Men may compete in the following categories, full beard, trimmed beard, fancy mustache and most effort for least results. A costume contest for all ages, including awards for the best dressed couple, family, male and female will be part of the festivities.
Registration forms to participate in the whiskerino competition are available at Meadowmont Lodge and Snowshoe Brewery in Arnold, Murphys Hotel and Murphys Suites in Murphys, Glory Hole Sports, Skeez’s Barber Shop and Turners Wild West located in Angels Camp, Treats General Store, San Andreas, Blondies in Mokelumne Hill, Senders Hardware and the Blunder Inn, Mountain Ranch, Valley Springs News in Valley Springs and in Copperopolis forms are available at Snaps and the Union Mine Country Store. Contestants must be clean shaven at the beginning of the competition. The competition starting date is entirely up to the individual. Competitors may begin growing their whiskers now or may wait until one day prior to the competition.
The Whiskerino will be on May 1 at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Mark Twain Hall. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $18 per person or $30 per couple. The price of the ticket includes admission, dinner and entertainment. Tickets will be available at the Fair office March 1. The Friends of the Calaveras County Fair is a non profit organization comprised of members dedicated to both the history and preservation of the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee.
