Paloma Resident Carlton Merrill Berry died Monday, January 11, 2010

Paloma, CA...Carlton Berry was born in Sheldon Junction, Vermont, on December 4, 1921. While in Vermont, he also lived in Fairbanks and Rutland. In 1942, after Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II. Carl served as a Radio Man on the USS Cachalot SS170 and the USS Ramora SS487. After the war, he operated a taxi business in Rutland, Vermont, with his brother Jim. One of his most memorable moments in Rutland was when he delivered the Christmas Tree to Rockefeller Center in Times Square...

In 1953, Carl left Rutland and traveled to the West Coast. On the way, he worked at the Ford Motor Company, Cleveland, Ohio, for a metal manufacturing company in Houston, Texas, for a metal plating business in Southern California. In 1954, he moved to Palo Alto and set up his own metal plating business, Metal Craft, in Santa Clara. Carl and his family later lived in Milpitas and Fremont. In October 1970, he moved to Paloma in Calaveras County. Carl continued his business in Santa Clara and commuted with his own plane from the Calaveras Airport to Santa Clara, until 1979, at the end of 25 years of business. During the 1980’s he operated two businesses in Calaveras County, a trucking business and a burl wood crafting business. At the end of his working life, Carl worked for Calaveras County at the Paloma transfer station for 5 years.

Carl enjoyed planes, motorcycles, bowling, boating, sport cars, swimming, playing the piano, trumpet, big band and country music, horses and his dog, “Buddy”. He was a ham radio operator his whole adult life and communicated regularly with his brother in Alaska, also a ham radio operator.

Carl is survived by his wife, Helen Berry, of Paloma, children, Jeanne Dye of Reno, Lila Grover of Plymouth, Richard Berry of Placerville, Jason Berry of Paloma, Rex Berry of San Andreas, George (Teddy) Berry of Stockton, Lorraine (Lorry) Weatherby of Mokelumne Hill, Jennifer Berry of Mountain Ranch, Lynne Silva of Oakley, and Carlton M. Berry II (Carl) of Elk Grove, stepson Jim Harrison of San Andreas, 14 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. The mother of Jason, Rex, Teddy, Lorry, Jennifer, Lynne, and Carl II, is Rita Berry of Valley Springs.

Viewing and meeting the family will be at San Andreas Memorial Chapel on Highway 49, Sunday, January 17, 2010 from 2pm to 6pm. A Memorial Service will be held at the San Andreas Covenant Church, 261 Treat Ave., on Monday January 18, 2010 at 1pm, with a reception to follow at the San Andreas Veterans Hall, Highway 49, in San Andreas. Donations can be made to the San Andreas Veterans, Post 2600.
