Teichert Foundation Supports Countywide Student Events
(Angels Camp, CA) – The Teichert Foundation has stepped up to help ensure that ambitious students can look forward to competing in countywide students events again this school year. The Foundation has awarded $7,500 to the Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE) to help fund the 2010 Academic Decathlon, Spelling Bee, Science Fair, and Math Mini Bowl. “We are very grateful for the Teichert Foundation’s support. It will strengthen our countywide student events in these difficult financial times and help our schools continue to promote academic excellence and student achievement,” said John Brophy, Calaveras County superintendent of schools.....
CCOE produces four countywide student events for the benefit all 6,500 students in the county. In 2010, the Academic Decathlon will take place on February 6, the county Spelling Bee on March 4, the county Science Fair on April 17 and the Math Mini Bowl on May 20. Among them, the four events directly recognize and promote achievement by more than 250 students in fourth through twelfth grades. All students are encouraged to participate in their school-level competitions. For school contest winners, countywide competitive academic events function as the bridge to state competition. The process helps ambitious students develop their confidence in public speaking; find practical, rewarding applications for their skills and talents; hone their competitive abilities; and connect with their peers.
“These events will help get the students more excited about learning, I suspect,” said Frederick Teichert, executive director of the Teichert Foundation. “What is done in class is only part of the whole picture of student success.”
The Teichert Foundation expresses the company's commitment to build and preserve a healthy and prosperous region. The foundation awards grants to community organizations and encourages employee philanthropy through a matching gift program. Grants are made to organizations that create beauty, foster culture, nurture children, provide access to food and housing for those in need, preserve nature, increase awareness of our environment, build an educated citizenry and a well-prepared workforce, and strive to provide better health for all.
CCOE is seeking community members to act as judges for the Academic Decathlon and Science Fair; those who can donate a few hours to meet some great students may contact County Superintendent of Schools John Brophy at (209) 736-4662.
