Columbia College's Fire Academy To Graduate 13 on December 14th

Columbia, CA....Columbia College’s Fire Academy will hold their graduation ceremony and presentation of Certification of Completion to 13 successful students of the Fire Technology Program. The event, which is open to the general public, will be held Monday December 14, starting at 7 PM in the campus’s Dogwood Theatre. The certificates will be awarded based on the student’s successful completion of the academic and manipulative training as mandated for a California Firefighter Level One. The students must still .......

complete six months of full-time or one year of part-time field experience before applying to the state for Firefighter I Certification. “Some of the graduates have obtained paying positions at local fire departments since entering the academy,” said Joe Doherty, college fire technology instructor. “In addition, most will continue their studies at Columbia College to pursue associate degrees.

Fire Technology scholarships will be awarded to. Evan Brach, Fire Academy Director’s Award; Chris Gazdik, Fire Academy Instructors’ Award; and Chris Scharf, Firefighters’ Memorial Award

The Keynote Speaker will be Acting State Fire Marshal, Tonya Hoover, whose variety of assignments during her fire career is inspirational. A historical perspective on being a fire fighter will be given by Rich Schuller, with over 50 years of service from firefighter to Fire Chief with a variety of departments. Rich’s grandson is one of the current graduates.

Family and friends will view a student produced audio visual presentation of their intensive 16 weeks of training. The rigorous training is designed to help serious candidates meet the requirements for demanding careers as professional firefighters, including over 300 hours of academic and manipulative training, according to Professor Doherty. The academy students have also completed over 100 hours of community service at local agencies as part of their community sensitivity training.

The closing speaker, Fire Captain Dean Wimberly, Cal Fire Tuolumne Calaveras Unit, an adjunct instructor in the college fire technology department, He will focus on the road ahead, and the need for ongoing professional training to remain current with changing fire agency demands.
