Patience Pays Off....Bret Harte Alum Sees First Pac-10 Action in UCLA win over Washington St. ~By John Hamilton
Pullman, WA...Brett Downey the 2007 Bret Harte Graduate saw his first game action in a UCLA uniform on Saturday. It must have seemed for Brett like this day would never come. He red-shirted his first year on the UCLA squad and just this last weekend earned his first playing time. You had to know that this day would come as how could you keep a 6 foot 7 and now 290lb. player in the wings forever. When we asked his dad and incoming AC City Councilman about his first minutes Rick had this to say...
A photo of Brett with his proud parents in his Bret Harte playing days
"Brett got his first action in the Pac 10 at left tackle. He went in with the second unit with 10:30 left in the 4th quarter. Got to play for two series. He did very well and was thrilled with the opportunity. We hope this is the start of something good. We were able to watch the game on direct tv so it was really exciting for us as well."
Even at 290lbs Brett is seen by many as still having room to grow. He should still be able gain significant size and strength.with the strength training at the Pac-10 level. A lean, physical and fast 320lb. playing weight is within Brett's reach.
Brett was offered starting roles at some smaller schools but he was willing to wait and grow into playing time for UCLA. Good luck Brett and let's hope this is the beginning of a great College playing career!!
