Two Calaveras Jr. Redskins Teams Make it to the 2009 Super Bowl!~ By Tammy Beilstein

Two Calaveras Jr. Redskins teams made it to the 2009 Super Bowl played at Amador High School. Both fought to the end, but unfortunately, only one came home with a victory. VARSITY: Once again the Calaveras Jr. Redskins Varsity team returned from the Super Bowl with a giant victory. Because of their exceptional record, the Jr. Reds’ domination over the Jr. Cowboys was practically expected by the Red’s team and their fans, but the win was a fantastic thrill none the less.....

Coach Bub Fisk called a great game as the Jr. Reds offense put up 46 points against the Jr. Cowboy’s 8. This brings the total of Jr. Redskins Varsity points scored to 286 for the season.

Malachi Stockdale was the workhorse in this game with 17 carries for 131 yards and 4 touchdowns. Stockdale was also on target kicking 5 for 6 extra points. Michael Seawell had 10 carries for 104 yard and a touchdown and Danny Gilmore had 8 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown catch. Evan Pavlacky racked-up 54 yards returning and 20 yards rushing before being injured in the 4th quarter with a fractured sternum. Quarterback Justyn Thornburg had an outstanding day going 4 for 4 for 65 yards and hooking up with Gilmore and Stockdale for two touchdowns passes. Thornburg was sacked and the Cowboys recovered the fumble on their 5 yard line. Coach Mossa's defense held the Cowboy at bay and Thornburg came back with a 95 yard drive resulting in a touchdown.

Because of Coach Mossa's brilliant defense the Cowboys were only able to score a single touchdown late in the game. In total, Mossa's defense had only given up 32 points the entire year.

Outstanding players on defense this week include Mathew Snider who led the way with 5 tackles, while Travis Rigsbee, Stockdale and Pavlacky had 4 tackles each. Morgan Simmons, Blake Ehlers and Thornburg all had Quarterback sacks.

“This was by far our best game” said Jr. Redskins Varsity Coach, Perri Turner. “Everyone did their jobs, they were ready to make the statement of ‘We are the best team this season’ and the results showed! Coaches Fisk, Mossa and I couldn't ask for a better way to go out.”

A lot of time, energy and effort go into making any sports program successful. Coach Turner wanted to acknowledge this by saying, “I would like to thank Bub Fisk for being a loyal assistant and friend for the past 10 years. Thank you to Manny Mossa for all his help the past 5 years, Steve Blodgett, Mark Stockdale, Robert Mossa and Brett Turner for this past season as well as my Team Mom, Denise Meyers. I'd like to thank all of my coaches from past years, Coaches Robert Rutledge, Dave Gellerman, Nic Hodgson, Glen Davis, Barry Benton, and John Brucklacher. Everyone has worked hard to make this program a success and I am very proud to have been a part of this.”

BANTAM:
The Calaveras Jr. Redskins Bantam team had a great season making it all the way to the Super Bowl but unfortunately fell a little short. The Jr. Reds lost to Argonaut 28-6 but the kids played a demanding game and played with a lot of heart.

Jr. Redskins Bantam Coach Mark Dunn said “Our team played extremely tough and I know I speak for all my coaches when I say that we are very proud of their efforts last weekend.”

Outstanding players this week include Marshall Biondi who was the Reds top rusher with 14 carries for 55yards. Jesse Batchelor had 25 yards rushing and Trace Durham rushed for 19 yards. Dante Piantanida definitely had a big day when he scored the Jr. Red’s only touchdown on a 3 yard run late in the game.

Defensively the Jr. Redskins had some fantastic performances with Elijah Stockdale and Nicholas Quinday leading the way with 6.5 tackles each. Piantanida contributed 4.5 tackles and Anthony Giangregorio followed with 3.5 tackles.

“It’s been a great year” said Coach Dunn. “Just making it to the Super Bowl is a great accomplishment and kids deserve most of the credit. I know all of us can’t wait for next season!”

Reflecting upon the season, Coach Dunn recognized and gave thanks to those who helped make the Bantam division of the program so successful. “First I want to thank our Team Mom Patty Edley who made our phone calls, sent emails and donated a lot of her time in the snack bar during every home game - She also had the luxury of washing our team uniforms every week,” joked Dunn. “A huge thanks goes to our President Denise Meyers and parent Lance Moore who supported us every game on the side lines, made sure injuries where taken care of and the kids stayed hydrated. I also wanted to thank Dee Dee Weatherby and Dave Beilstein for capturing our game time moments through their cameras each game.”

Thinking of those who have been with him on the field for every game and every practice, Dunn said, “My biggest thank you goes to my coaches Donald Durham, Steve Biondi, Robert Batchelor, George Quinday, Paul Abeyta, John Kelley and John Kelley Sr. who all did an outstanding job with these kids this year. These coaches dedicated the last 4 months to this program and to the kids, so a huge thanks to all of them for helping make this a great season.”

Last but not least, “Thank you to all the Calaveras Jr. Redskins Board Members for another great year of football - And a special thank you to Varsity Coach Perri Turner for his 10 years of service in this program! We congratulate him on his success and wish him the best!”
