Jr. Redskin Varsity and Bantam teams advance to the Super Bowl~ By Tammy Beilstein

On October 31st the Jr. Redskins took part in the second round of Playoff games. The Varsity and Bantam teams played at Sonora High School while the JV team played at Argonaut High School. Sadly, the JV team had a rough go of it and found themselves on the losing side of the score - But the Jr. Redskins are not done with their season yet as the Varsity and Bantam teams each walked away from their respective games with wins and an invitation to the Super Bowl....

VARSITY:
The Calaveras Jr. Redskin’s Varsity team is going to their 4th straight Super Bowl after beating the Sonora Jr. Cats 34-8. Jr. Redskin Varsity Coach Perri Turner said, “We had a good day on both sides of the ball. The kids played with intensity and we only had 25 offensive plays the entire game.”

Jr. Reds Offensive Coordinator Bub Fisk said he is very happy with where the team is at and where they are going - to the Super Bowl.

Outstanding offensive players on Coach Fisk’s side of the ball include Malachi Stockdale who scored 2 touchdowns including one on a 31 yard run and one on a 4 yard run. In total, Stockdale had 6 carries for 84 yards. Grant McKinney had 8 carries for 57 yards and scored a touchdown for his team on a 1 yard run. Michael Seawell had 2 carries for 22 yards and a 14 yard pass from Justyn Thornburg which resulted in a touchdown. Seawell also returned a punt 35 yard to the house for a touchdown.

Defensively, the Jr. Reds played sound football. Outstanding defensive players this week include Evan Pavlacky who led the way with 7 tackles and a fumble recovery. Danny Gilmore, Malachi Stockdale, Grant McKinney and Max Smith each had 4 tackles and Emmett Barrett had 3 with a sack. Coach Turner said, “Barrett was all over their offensive line. Coach Mossa gave Barrett free rein of the field and Barrett took advantage causing havoc all over the place.”

When asked about his thoughts regarding this year’s Varsity team, Coach Turner said, “This team is playing as a unit, and playing well. We are looking forward to next week and we hope to go out with a win.” About himself and his coaching staff, Turner said, “This is our last season together with the Jr. Reds. Coach Fisk has been with me for 10 years and Coach Mossa for 5 years. Both are big part of this program’s success.”

JV:
Saturday’s game against the Argonaut Jr. Mustangs ended in a loss for the Jr. Redskins JV team with a final score of 6-39.
BANTAM:

Jr. Redskin Bantam Coach Mark Dunn said the second round of Playoffs was everything the coaches and their team expected. “We practiced hard last week and the kids came to play” he said. “It was a great win and overall our team played well on both sides.” Final score of the Bantam Jr. Redskins vs. Linden Jr. Lions, 20-16.

Outstanding players on the Jr. Redskin offense include Quarterback Dylan Byrd who led the way by completing 6 of 8 passes for 118 yards including a 55 yard touchdown pass to Jesse Batchelor who fought his way across the goal line. Jesse Batchelor also racked-up 10 carries for 51 yards and a second touchdown against the Sonora Jr. Cats. TE Trenton Herring had a great game catching 3 of those passes from Byrd and giving his team an additional 34 yards. Marshall Biondi was the leading rusher with 13 carries for 88 yards and one touchdown. Biondi also had a 35 yard kick return that led to one of the Jr. Reds scoring drives.

On defense the Jr. Reds played tough giving up only one touchdown late in the game. Outstanding defensive players include Nicholas Quinday with 4 tackles, Kirk Overly with 3.5 tackles, Trevor Ramirez with 2.5 tackles, and Tristen Madsen with 2.5 tackles plus one interception.

When asked about his strategy regarding the upcoming Super Bowl, Coach Mark Dunn said, “We made a couple key mistakes that should have turned into touchdowns, so that’s the area we will focus on this week. Argonaut is a tough team but we will be ready for the challenge.” Speaking on his thoughts as to the outcome of the Super Bowl, Dunn added, “I believe the team with the fewest mistakes will win this game. Our team is excited and looking forward to a great competition this Saturday!”

**A special note regarding the Calaveras Jr. Redskin football teams**

For the last 4 weeks, players on each level of the Calaveras Jr. Reds have been wearing pink tape around their wrists and ankles as well as pink ribbons on their helmets. This is in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Jr. Reds Varsity Coach Perri Turner said, “Denise Meyer (President, Jr. Redskins Board) came up with the suggestion of having the players wear the pink ribbons and I thought it was a great idea. This issue hits home and is really close to my heart because my mom, Shirley Turner of San Jose, is a two-time cancer survivor. She beat breast cancer at the age of 55, colon cancer at 60, and now at the age of 73, Mom is still going strong!”

Seeing these young men wear pink on their uniforms in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was a wonderful sight indeed…
