CALAVERAS VISITORS BUREAU WINS STATE TOURISM AWARD

Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras Visitors Bureau was one of three California counties awarded the Bright Ideas in Tourism Award at a statewide rural tourism conference held earlier this week in Big Bear, California. The conference, “Beyond the Gateways” is put on by the California Travel Industry Association (CalTIA) whose goals are achieved through tourism advocacy, education and collaboration. The Beyond the Gateways Conference is an educational forum that focuses on common issues of rural destinations....

The idea that won the Bright Idea is one that the Calaveras Visitors Bureau started over the summer – the Visitor Incentive Program. It’s a straightforward, cost-effective program where visitors receive a VIP Discount Keycard. The card is presented at participating businesses that are identified in a VIP Brochure and the visitor receives the corresponding discount. The idea was so popular that the Calaveras Visitors Bureau was approached by VIA Magazine to determine how they could be a part of the idea and a new partnership was formed.

Currently, there are about 35 participating member businesses. “Our visitors love getting the discount card. They feel like they really are VIP’s and they should because they are! Our members like it because it’s one more way to get customers in their place of business and the only thing it costs the member is the discount they are offering,” stated Lisa Mayo, Executive Director of the Calaveras Visitors Bureau. In addition, the cards have the Calaveras Visitors Bureau website and phone number so when visitors head home, they have a little reminder on their keychain about their trip to Calaveras County and a quick way to get back in touch if they want to.

“It was an honor to receive this award and to share something successful that we’ve done that can help my colleagues in the tourism industry. Several people came up to me afterward and wanted to know more about the program,” stated Mayo. The prize for winning this achievement is free registration to next year’s Beyond the Gateways Conference.
