Ebbetts Pass Fire District Station One...Doing What it Was Designed to Do! By John Hamilton
Arnold, CA...Earlier this month when EPFD Station One was ground zero in the search for the missing local hunter it reminded us that The EPFD Board of Directors and then Chief Wilkes had it right all along and even took some lumps for designing and building the new station. The station is really coming into it's own and the foresight of those involved is becoming evident. The station was designed as much more than just a fire station. It was designed to be an operational base for any large scale disaster or incident. During the hunter search Calaveras County Sheriff's Department PIO Dave Seawell moved in a set up shop. He instantly had a place to work, make presentations, working internet and they even gave him his own office. All of the Sacramento market TV stations came and set up their satellite trucks in the parking lot....

and instead of it becoming a chaotic scene, Station One handled it all in stride and Chief David Baugher and his crew helped everyone out and took it all in like it was just another day at the office.
There was even a sense of normalcy as the Hazel Fisher Elementary School visited for Fire Safety week and took their tour and observed operations like it was just a normal day at EPFD.
The Ebbetts Pass Corridor can be proud of their fire district. It is largely viewed as the model for many of the other districts to follow. Their model is being emulated by Copperopolis and with the looming contract renewal of the ambulance service in the County you can be sure the many of the other districts are looking to become all medic engines like EPFD as well.
Incidents like the successful hunter rescue only highlighted the hard work and funding by many in the community to ensure that the Arnold area is prepared and ready for whatever mother nature or man might throw at it...
