Michelson’s Autumn Harvest Brings Mexican Cuisine~with Video and Photos by John Hamilton

Murphys, CA....They’re at it again! Michelson students were treated to a special assembly this morning. They saw how ears of corn grew on a stalk, how they were husked, and once ground what they could be used for. Victoria Nava and Rebecca Nava provided a tortilla demonstration while Michelle Lane, the school’s interpreter, related in English what the parents were saying in Spanish as they worked in front of the entire student body. These Michelson moms mixed corn flour and water showing the students .....

how to knead, roll and press the dough using an authentic tortilla press. Then they cooked the freshly made tortillas as the aroma of the bread filled the gymnasium. Mrs. Parisi, Albert Michelson School Principal, Gretchen McReynolds, Vallecito District Office Business Manager and Food Service Director, and Jenny Baxter, teacher, worked with Daniela Rivera, Laura Nava, Olivia Monroy, Michael Charbonneau and Melissa Phillips squeezing limes, peeling garlic and chopping cilantro to make a salsa for tomorrow’s lunch. Tim Smith, otherwise know as Michelson’s groovy gardener, along with Ryan Heryford and McCall Pyle gathered the red, green and yellow tomatoes from the school’s community garden along with some heads of garlic and baby red onions to contribute to the salsa. The children can’t wait for tomorrow’s lunch when they can actually sample the homemade tortillas, salsa and Spanish rice that will be provided for their lunch under the direction of Karla St. Louis, kitchen manager. What a fabulous way for students to learn about cultures, gardening, cooking, math, comprehension and science!
