Master Gardener Program Seeking Volunteers
University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Calaveras County is looking for enthusiastic gardeners and community minded individuals interested in training to become certified University of California Master Gardener volunteers. Consider joining the many Master Gardeners who are available to answer gardening questions for residents, help others learn gardening techniques using hands on demonstrations and enjoy meeting people with similar interests.....
An orientation explaining benefits, commitment required and volunteer expectations will be held Thursday, October 8, 2009 at the San Andreas Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Rd. from 9:30 - 11:30 AM. The orientation will describe how Master Gardeners help the public with plant and pest-related questions using the latest research-based horticulture information and other program activities. The 15 week training class will be held weekly at the San Andreas Library on Thursdays, beginning in late January, 2010 and include lectures, online demonstrations and hands-on activities designed to give new gardeners an overview of applied gardening practices and long time gardeners' new resources with updated information. Gardeners must pass a final exam and commit to 50 hours of volunteer service to master gardener projects, including the Demonstration Garden in San Andreas, the first year following certification.
The training fee of $175 covers costs for textbooks, reference books, class handouts and hands-on material. Class instruction, demonstrations and hands-on activities are free to those who commit to the volunteer obligation. Business owners, commercial landscape contractors, and individuals are welcome to complete the training, without volunteer obligation, for $325.
Applications for the 2010 training will be available beginning September 25th, online at http://cecalaveras.ucdavis.edu/Master_Gardeners/ or by calling the Master Gardener Helpline at 754-2880 and asking to be put on the interest list.
