Arnold, CA.... Congressman Dan Lungren was present for a press tele-conference today that puts the spotlight on how federal recovery money can assist with much needed economic relief and sustainable development in hard hit rural areas of the state. "The Forest Service is excited and pleased to be receiving ARRA funds that will help employ area residences to complete trails and recreation facility projects in the Stanislaus National Forest, many of them here on the Calaveras Ranger District,” said Teresa Mc Clung, Calaveras District Ranger, Stanislaus National Forest. “In addition to pumping much need money into our local economy the completion of these projects over the next two years will improve the land and greatly enhance the public’s recreation opportunities near local communities."
The projects are anticipated to begin construction in the spring with a completion date before the end of 2010. One of the two projects will result in the development of a handicapped accessible trail that starts near the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum and Hazel Fischer School on the edge of White Pines Park. That project is now on the fast track designed to create local job opportunities in the short run for construction and longer-term benefits by creating infrastructure that benefits recreation and tourism in the region.
The other project highlighted during the call will construct approximately 3 miles of new trail in the San Domingo canyon near Hathaway Pines. This trail segment will connect with a recently completed 10 mile segment of the Arnold Rim Trail that runs from Avery-Sheep Ranch Road to White Pines.
Supervisor Merita Callaway, herself a weekend volunteer helping with construction of the trail is thrilled with this development of District 3's most precious natural assets in a way that serves local forest lands, the economy and constituent needs all in one project.
Arnold Rim Trail Association's Tyler Summersett is part of a local group of residents assisting the Forest Service to develop and enhance The Arnold Rim Trail, a 30-40 mile trail that will encircle towns and communities and connect mid-mountain streams, scenic vistas, verdant forests and historical resources, making them more accessible to hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.
"Saturday, Sept. 12, we'll celebrate our initial volunteer efforts with the Arnold Rim Trail by joining the Scenic Byway Celebration as one of the newer features of our area,” said Summersett. “We've come a long way and have a long way to go. Limited tours and activities will highlight the trail for recreational users. It should be great fun!"
