Tuolumne County Exhibit Wins Another Gold at the State Fair!~by Nancy Sikes
For the 5th year in a row, Tuolumne County was awarded a gold ribbon at the California State Fair in Sacramento. The judges’ decision was announced at the annual Awards Ceremony for the County Exhibits at Cal Expo. Accepting the award from the Patti Garamendi, State Fair Counties, Exhibits Assistant General Manager on behalf of the judges were Tuolumne County Supervisors Dick Pland and Paolo Maffei, General Manager of Black Oak Casino, Ron Patel, Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau Marketing Manager Sandy Gordon and Marketing Consultant Bruce Tepper.......
“Wild, Weird & Wacky,” the theme established by the State Fair Board this year gave the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau some interesting challenges. “Fortunately our residents and businesses offered a number of items related to each word”, said Nanci Sikes, Executive Director of the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau. “We took great advantage of our resident ghosts in our Gold Rush era hotels and included posters from the Poison Oak Festival and the Groveland mayoral race (which included a dog running for mayor to promote their 49er Festival)”, she added.
Judging for the award is based on a point system with credit for animation, technology, natural materials, products grown or produced in the region and components of the exhibit that relate specifically to the theme. The exhibit incorporated all of the above in its design and the activities and events it promotes such as “wild adventures” (from skiing to white water rafting), UFO sightings and the aforementioned ghosts to cover the weird and our unique festivals to cover the wacky. Also displayed are many unique historical artifacts and Native-American cultural pieces.
This exhibit is a partnership between the County of Tuolumne, Black Oak Casino, and the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau.
The fair runs through Monday of Labor Day Weekend –September 7. There are still a few openings for volunteers to staff the Tuolumne County Exhibit for a morning or an afternoon shift. Volunteers are provided free passes to the Fair and free parking permits. If interested, please call the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau at (209) 533-4420.
