2009 Jamboree Held at Bret Harte High School on Saturday~by Tammy Beilstein
Angels Camp, CA....Saturday was a big day for local athletes involved in youth football. After weeks of intense practices which involve conditioning training, stamina exercises, agility drills, as well as offense and defense maneuvers, it was time for the players to show their stuff. The 2009 Jamboree was held at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp. Because of construction projects and installation of a new synthetic turf football field, all games were played on the AMA baseball fields across from the high school....
Calaveras Junior Redskin’s Varsity Coach Perri Turner said his team was fortunate to have the opportunity to scrimmage last week in Oakdale’s Jamboree. Not only was it good for the kids to get a preview of what was to come, but the experience motivated the players to work even harder.
Turner said, “I was told that Oakdale posted an uncomplimentary statement about the teams from the Mother Lode League. Our boys took that to heart and decided they wanted to make a statement of their own by only giving up 25 total yards to Oakdale, and 45 yards total to the Waterford and Manteca teams. As coaches, we were very please with the way our kids played – especially after having only two weeks of practice.”
About Saturday’s Jamboree, Coach Turner said, “This week was basically a repeat of last week with the same results. The Jr. Redskin’s Varsity team shut down the Cowboys, Bullfrogs and Jr. Cats to 45 yards. We scored 14 times and gave up 0.”
Calaveras Jr. Redskins Football and Cheer is made up of four levels – Mighty Mites, Bantam, Junior Varsity, and Varsity.
When asked about the younger players Turner stated, “We still have some work to do and are looking forward to a great season, but I am very please with the way all four programs are going. The Bantam team looks very strong this year.”
When asked why he thinks athletes from Calaveras County compete so powerfully against other areas, Turner supposed, “That’s the difference of corn fed and meat fed."
