Calaveras County, CA....Twisted Oak Winery to release their 2007 Calaveras County River of Skulls on August 15th, 2009 at their Cave Loot Extravaganza! That's right - your favorite pirate party, the 6th Annual Cave Loot Extravaganza is fast approaching! Join us at the Winery in Vallecito on Saturday, August 15th from about 1PM to 5PM for all of the debauchery festivities! Admission is free and exclusive to members of The Twisted Few and their guests. What is a “Cave Loot”, you ask? This is our annual “thank you” event for you, The Twisted Few. We dress up as pirates, we open the cave to you, and we sample Twisted grog from barrels using a “wine thief” (and offering futures sales to boot). We serve some grub that is vaguely piratical, we say....

.“ARRRRRRRR!!!” way more than you usually hear in polite company, and generally have a naughty time of it.
What do you need to do? Most importantly, you have to show up! Piratical attire, er, garb is encouraged but not required - but if you do arrive sporting some fine swashbuckling kit, you’ll have the chance to win some fine booty, er, prizes. And also, it will help us a lot if you would order your free tickets in advance so we can have enough grub for everyone! Just call the winery (209-736-9080) and you can order tickets over the phone.
The following wines will be tasted and will be available for sale at the event:

Rave Reviews for the 2006 Vintage!
"I love Mourvedre so the River of Skulls certainly sounded like a wine I would enjoy. And it pleased me immensely. It had a nice ruby color though it was not overly dark. When I smelled it, a delightful torrent of lush fruit wafted up from the wine luring me deeper into the glass. The taste fulfilled the promise of its nose, provide ripe cherry and strawberry flavors that mingled with hints of vanilla and spice. The spice was most prominent on the finish, as well as with a touch of tobacco, though in a good way. I don't smoke and dislike its acrid smell yet a touch of tobacco flavor in wine is pleasing to me. There were some moderate tannins so this wine may go best with food to help mellow those out. The finish is very long and satisfying, making you yearn for more." - Richard Auffrey on The Passionate Foodie
"...dried cherries galore, vanilla oakiness, and tobacco leaf spiciness. The palate was full of even more smokiness and spice - and booze. Nothing shy about the booze in this sucker, but I'm Ok with that because I expect it from this grape. It's when I get 14.9% white wines and Bordeaux style red blends from CA that I start to get all, well, twisted inside. On the second day of tasting, I got more raspberry and blueberry than on Day 1 - still going strong. River of Skulls is a wine that's worth the price tag, especially if you've got some smoked or peppered meat to serve with it. Boo-yeah!" - Joe Roberts, CSW, on 1WineDude

Tasting Notes
With a name like River of Skulls, you know it has to be good... An ankle bone of cherries is connected to the shin bone of raspberries, which connects to the knee bone of smoky vanilla. The knee bone is connected to the leg bone of Mourvedre’s natural tabacco character, which connects to the hip bone, back bone and neck bone of a nice long finish. Oh Dem Skulls!
