5 Million Californians Say Yes to Organ Donation....Donate Life California Reaches Milestone of Registered Organ and Tissue Donors

SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), in partnership with Donate Life California, announced today that 5 million Californians have signed up to become organ and tissue donors--making California the largest organ and tissue donor registry in the nation. “We are very proud that this partnership is truly making a difference and saving lives. Our customers have come to know that taking one minute to mark the “yes” box on an application could mean a lifetime to someone else,” said DMV ....

.Director George Valverde. “At the DMV, we have seen first-hand the importance of organ donation. Some of our own employees have donated organs to loved ones, received transplants themselves or are still in need of life-saving donations.”

Since 2006, customers can sign up to be an organ or tissue donor while applying for or renewing their driver licenses/ID cards at the DMV. With more that 21,000 people in California on the waiting list for life saving organs and tissues, DMV customers have stepped up to the cause by marking the “yes” box on their applications to be placed on the official organ donor registry. Currently, more than 150,000 Californians register as organ donors each month, with 98 percent through the DMV process.

Don’t Stand In Line, Go Online! Doing business with the DMV has never been easier. The DMV offers an array of services to customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through its Web site (www.dmv.ca.gov), including online appointments for written and drive tests; vehicle registration and driver license renewals, selection of personalized license plates, changes of address and payment of fees via secure debit transactions.

DMV is a department under the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, which is under the direction of Secretary Dale E. Bonner. The DMV licenses drivers; maintains driving records; registers and tracks official ownership of vehicles and vessels; investigates auto and identity-related fraud; and licenses car dealers, driving schools, and traffic violator schools.
