The 2009 Death Ride Going On Now...Ebbetts Pass Closed at Hermit Valley Until 3pm Today!

Markeeville, CA...Over 2,500 (Lucky) Cyclists are taking part in the largest sporting event in Alpine County today. The Death Ride is the annual cycling classic that draws cyclists from all over the world to tackle one of the toughest single day rides in existence. 5 passes with over 15,000 vertical feet of climbing. Numerous local riders from all along the corridor and Bear Valley are entered and making their annual trek into the deep reaches of their personal pain tolerance levels. Typically almost 5,000 entrants vie for approximately 2,500 slots on ride day. More on the race from...

the event website...

"Recognized as one of the premier cycling events in the West, the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate in the 29th Anniversary of the Death Ride®, while enjoying the magnificent scenery and warm hospitality of Alpine County!

This year’s ride returns riders to our infamous five pass course including:

* Monitor Pass (8,314')
* Ebbetts Pass (8,730')
* Carson Pass (8,573')

Beginning and ending at Turtle Rock Park just north of Markleeville, California, the five pass ride includes 129 miles and 15,000+ feet of lung busting climbing. You also have the option of riding one, two, three or four passes. For your safety, the first four passes will be closed at specific times to vehicular traffic.

Five pass finishers will receive a five-pass pin and be eligible to purchase an exclusive five-pass finisher jersey.

Start & Cut-Off Time:
Generally, the start-time is 5:30am. Starting before 5:30am requires proper lighting. Riders not planning on completing all passes please start a little later to avoid congestion. Line up at the Turtle Rock Park start area to be let on the course when it opens. All riders must be off the course by 8:00 pm.

Road Closures:
From 5:00am - 9:00am, the road will be closed to traffic from the Markleeville Courthouse to the junction of Highways 89 & 4. Monitor & Ebbetts Pass’ will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at 5:00 am."
