Knowing When and How to Harvest

Master Gardeners July Open Garden Day will be held July 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their Demonstration Garden at the Government Center, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas. The featured topic at 10:30 a.m. will be “Knowing When and How to Harvest.” Now that warm weather has arrived many fruits and vegetables in the home garden are ripening and almost ready to pick. But how do you know for sure that the peaches or pears are truly ripe and ready? Or what about those underground veggies – like potatoes or onions – how do you know “it’s time”? Master Gardeners will be available to answer these and other questions the public may have about harvesting their garden’s bounty....

Gardening information is offered free of charge. In addition, the learning center will be staffed by Master Gardeners who will answer questions and distribute reference information. Tours of the demonstration garden will also be available.

The very popular Children’s Garden will also be open. Kids of all ages are welcome. At 10 a.m. there will be a children’s program offered to teach them all about the wonderful world of worms.

Tours of the garden can also be arranged for community groups, school groups, clubs and other organizations. For further details about scheduling a tour, contact Karen Riley at 754-6473.

When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the Help Line: 754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call.

For additional details contact the UC Cooperative Extension office at 754-6477.
