You Can Assist the Calaveras Garden to Family Program in Feeding the Hungry in Calaveras County

Do you want to help yourself and others in a fun fulfilling way? Do you have a 2’ by 2’ or larger plot of dirt, grass or weeds, a south facing windowsill or an apartment balcony? If you answered yes to any of these questions you can assist the Calaveras Garden to Family program in feeding the hungry in Calaveras County. Calaveras Garden to Family has hundreds of vegetable starts available...

for you to start a small garden, grow a single tomato in a pot or tend a container of lettuce in your windowsill. These starts are available free of charge and include, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash and melons.

To participate in this program all you have to do is sign up online at http://cecalaveras.ucdavis.edu or come to the UC Cooperative Extension
office at the corner of Mtn. Ranch Rd and Hwy 49 to fill out a paper
survey. Of course you may eat the fruits and vegetables of your labor,
giving the extra produce to community members in need with any excess to
the Resource Connection Food Bank.

Calaveras Garden to Family is a collaboration of the University of California Cooperative Extension, the Resource Connection, Master Gardeners and Calaveras County Behavioral Health Services. Our mission is to empower families to produce some of their own food while providing for them in the meantime. If you don’t have any space to grow vegetables you can still participate in the program, there are volunteer opportunities available for every skill set. Volunteer opportunities include: transporting vegetable starts from those who seeded them to those who wish to grow them, transporting ripe fruits and vegetables to the Food Bank and coordinating work parties in community and private gardens. If none of those activities sound like your cup of tea, we are also looking for healthy recipes made with fresh produce and assistants capable of helping with gardening and nutrition classes.

In short, we are seeking Calaveras county residents willing to help themselves and others. Please fill out our online survey and participate in our forum at http://gardentofamily.ning.com/. Let's get growing as a community!
