New Melones Fishing Report for June 8th, 2009~By Glory Hole Sports

Trout: bank anglers should head to the creeks, such as Angels or Murphys Creek, and use Power Bait or Pautski's fire eggs. Trollers are much more likely to catch kokanee right now, but we are seeing nice rainbows in mixed trout/kokanee limits. Most have been caught on kokanee rigs. As a rule, trout are 10 feet shallower than kokanee. Trollers should use shad or rainbow trout-patterned lures such as Needlefish, Kastmasters, Excel spoons, or a crawler/spinner combo from 20-30 feet deep over deep water in the main river channel upriver and in the main lake for rainbows. For browns, troll Rapala Countdowns or Trophy Sticks in rainbow trout or shad patterns, or roll shad, 50-60 feet deep (in the same areas, but closer to structure)......

Robert Muhlbeier of Sonora wins the Glory Hole Sports Big Fish (salmonid) of the Week Contest and a free deli lunch with a 4-pound, 3-ounce rainbow trout that he caught while trolling a pink Hootchie behind a green dodger 64 feet deep near Carson Cove. Gary Patterson caught a 3-pound rainbow on a hootchie/dodger combo near Rose Island. Mark Leltr caught a rainbow on a hootchie/dodger set-up, too. Ralph Dawson caught a nice rainbow on a shad broken-back Rapala, and 4-year-old Riley Sullivan caught a rainbow on a gold broken-back Rebel.

Kokanee: Easy limits of fat 14"-16" fish, with many more hook-ups. The bite seems to be best in the very early morning, so get out on the water at dawn. Anglers also report much better action on windy days. The main lake is best- troll near the spillway, the dam and Rose Island, as well as under the Hwy 49 Stevenot Bridge. Troll between 50-65 ft. deep anywhere over deep water, and you will catch kokanee. Best lures seem to be any pink or orange hootchie baits. A hot new bait is a hootchie with a bill to make it wiggle more- Crystal Basin Tackle make them in several good colors. You still use a dodger with this lure, with a longer (15-18" leader). Uncle Larry or RMT spinners (or a hootchie/spinner combination) are also working well. All lures should be trolled behind dodgers, Crystal Basin or Glitter Bug trolling blades, or Sling Blades in chrome, gold, pink, or chartreuse. Tip your hooks with shoepeg corn soaked in scent- garlic continues to be hot, and anise and Kokanee Special were also mentioned. Some anglers are adding a touch of vanilla extract to their corn. Pautski's Fire Corn has also been working well, in any color. Try a Berkley Gulp Waxie in place of the corn on your lure- that seems to be a good set- up, too. There were too many anglers who caught kokanee this week to mention names. Kokanee fishing is red-hot!

Bass: bite was good. Please gently release any bass that you catch. Remember- the Department of Fish and Game does not plant bass, so it is up to us to maintain our bass fishery. There is a hot top-water bite going on at dawn and dusk and continuing throughout the day. Throw a Zara Spook, buzz bait, or Pop-Rs. When the sun is up, throw Senkos, jigs, Carolina-rigged 6" worms, rip-baits, spinnerbaits, Zoom Baby Brush Hogs, as well as spinnerbaits.

Barry Franks caught a 5-pound, 8-ounce bass on a jerk bait by the marina.

Catfish: starting to pick up. Use anchovies, mackerel, sardines, chicken liver, or a ball of nightcrawlers. Leave your bail open so the cats can pick the bait up and swim with it- you will be more likely to hook them that way. Be sure to use a sliding sinker weight. McCoy's McStoppers are great for keeping the sinker off the bait without messing around with a swivel, or splitshot that can damage your line.

Chris Limas of Stockton wins Glory Hole Sports Big Catfish of the Week Contest and a free deli lunch with a 12-pound, 15-ounce cat that he caught, along with a 6-pound cat, on nightcrawlers.

Crappie and bluegill: Fair-to-good. Night fishing under a light is best. Crappie can be found hanging out in submerged trees, about 10'-30' feet deep. Bear Creek, Mormon Creek and Carson Creek are all good bets. For crappie, try fishing live small or medium minnows, or crappie jigs with jigs in red/white, black/chartreuse or purple/white. Remember- 25 is the limit for crappie.
