Copperopolis was smokin’ hot on Saturday…well at least the chili was smokin’ hot!~by Charity Maness

Copperopolis, CA....The first annual sixth grade science camp chili cook-off sponsored by Micki and Larry’s Sports Pub was an astounding success. The entrants in the youth division ranged from a mere nine years old to fifteen years old. The judges had a tough time judging this one. After some serious debate the judges decided they needed one more sample each of “the Dominator” and “Hoorah”. At first I thought they were simply extremely hungry judges, but it seemed there was a tie. Taking their title of judge seriously (as serious as possible seeing as how they were sequestered in the Sports Pub) they knew a winner had to be....

chosen. Drum roll please… and the winner was…. Dominic Celillo with “the Dominator” following closely on his heels was Marshall Maness with “Hoorah.” Third place went to a sweet little girl by the name of Morgan Boudreau (Annie and Ken Ostema’s granddaughter I believe) whose only nine years old.
Evidently the kids of Copper sure know how to whip up some awesome chili. One cook-off customer had the where with all to show up with an empty Tupperware container and actually purchased some chili that he found to his liking. Now, that’s a brilliant way to assure yourself a meal for a couple of days. I just hope he remembered to get some antacids on the way home (I happen to know how many jalapenos were put in that chili he purchased).
The adult winners were Anne and J.D. with “Hell’s Kitchen Chili.” I’m told it was an incredibly ferocious chili. The name alone told me to give it a wide berth. It needs to be said here that these incredibly generous people gave their winnings back to help support our children.
The Lions Club served BBQ hotdogs and soda, the incoming sixth graders sold ice cold water, and the Sports Pub served up nachos with all the proceeds benefitting the Copperopolis Elementary sixth grade science camp.
At the end of the day with the total of the sales, the generosity of the Sports Pub, a wonderful donation from Greg Brown, and a very kind anonymous donor, we were able to raise $924. Absolutely phenomenal!

Thank you Copper and all of you who came out to support our children…our future.
Charity Maness
