Rescue of 25 Chilren and Seven Adults~by Sgt. Ken Diaz

At about 1019 hours this morning Tuolumne County Dispatch Center received a phone call from Cal Fire stating that there were four children that were Hypothermic and sick near Pinecrest Lake. Cal fire, Search and Rescue and Tuolumne County Boat Patrol along with an Ambulance crew and Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office responded to the Pinecrest area to assist. On 6-3-09 twenty five 7th graders from the Stone Bridge Charter School from the Napa Scholl District along with two guides from Sierra Out Door School, one Teacher and four other adults went to Cleos Bath near Pinecrest Lake for a two day camping trip. ....

During the night of 6-5-09, the group encountered snow, hail, rain and wind along with a drop in temperature.

On morning of 6-6-09, the group was hiking out of the area in a heavy rain when four of the children started showing signs of Hypothermia and became ill. The group took shelter in a rocky area between Cleos Bath and Pinecrest Lake. The Guides and other adults put the sick children into sleeping bags to warm them and kept them hydrated while one of the guides walked twenty one of the children to the Pinecrest Lake. The guides contacted their office who then contacted Cal Fire and the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office.
Tuolumne County Search and Rescue (SAR), Cal Fire, Sheriff’s Deputies and Ambulance crew responded to the Lake.

One boat from Cal Fire and One from Tuolumne County Boat Patrol assisted in bringing all the involved parties across the Lake and to the Pinecrest Fire House.

At about 1345 hrs, after ambulance crews tended to the four Hypothermic children and one other student who was showing signs of fatigue. All parties were cleared and released at the scene.
