CHP's R.A.I.D Program Visited Calaveras Last Weekend ~By John Hamilton
San Andreas, CA...We had the pleasure of seeing CHP's Rapid Apprehension of Impaired Drivers or RAID program in action. We stopped by the CHP Office in San Andreas on Saturday evening to see them in action. The local CHP office brought additional Officers, Motorcycle Units, Screening Equipment and even their own in house Phlebotomist from their air medical crew for blood draws. CHP Officer Jaimie Castillo and even some visiting officers from other areas were gracious enough to fill in some of the details for us....
While we were there one DUI suspect was brought in to be processed. I guessed that she may have been drinking but I thought she would be under the legal limit. Boy was I wrong...her blood alcohol level came back at .16 which was twice the legal limit.
It takes a trained eye to spot this type of offender. One officer we spoke with mentioned that anyone can spot the driver that is weaving all over the road and is obviously intoxicated or other wise impaired. It takes real skill and observation to catch the less but still potentially harmful drivers.
Some of the things they look for are the lapses in judgement or the lack of ability to multi-task or awareness of a drivers surroundings. An impaired driver might be concentrating so hard on keeping it between the lines that they forget to dim their lights or stop just a bit too close or too far back at an intersection.
The grant funded program allows them to fund overtime and additional officers to target areas with a high possible concentration of impaired drivers. In a recent RAID action in the Sacramento area they had 32 DUI arrests handed out 82 citations.
So if you thought you were seeing a high profile law enforcement presence last weekend you were right. In addition to the normal level of officers we would normally see on Frog Jump
