Educational Forum on Affordable Housing Offered to the Public on June 24~by Holly Mines
Calaveras County, CA....On Thursday, June 11th, Mintier Harnish, consultants for the Calaveras County Housing Element, held a stakeholders meeting to get ideas from citizens, county officials and developers about the direction the county should take in providing housing for all county residents, including those with limited incomes, seniors and other underserved populations....
In keeping with State Law, each jurisdiction in California must make available an adequate supply of housing to persons of all economic levels with a balance between affordable ownership and rental units. By ensuring access to affordable housing, communities can enjoy greater economic development, lower pollution, improved access to services and a better quality of life for everyone.
Concerned Citizens Promoting Housing Opportunities for All believes that Calaveras County has not been successful in the past in implementing measures to accomplish a balance in housing because people neither understand the law nor understand how to implement it.
To this end, we will present an Educational Forum on Affordable Housing
on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the Chesebrough Room at the San Andreas Library (behind the Govt. Center on Gold Hunter Rd.)
The forum is free and open to the public. Those attending the forum will be invited to join our committee so that we will have the widest possible representation from all stakeholders as we respond to the drafts of the Housing Element.
The forum will feature two informational sessions:
An explanation of the very successful Below Market Rate Housing Program of the City of Ripon, begun in 2001. It blends It blends workforce housing with high end residentail units in the same subdivision. Sheryl Prater, Development Specialist in Ripon, will present.
Visionary Home Builders of Stockton has financed and built more than 1,000 rental units and 350 homes for lower income families and provided ownership education and foreclosure counseling to many more. Carol Ornelas, CEO and José Nuño, Dir. Of Development will provide details of their agency’s work and take questions from the audience.
