Ernie Watts Headlines Last Big Band Concert for the Season!
The Columbia College Big Band is pulling out all the stops for their last concert of the season at the Dogwood Forum theater on the college campus. The availability of special guest artist Ernie Watts made the bonus performance on Wednesday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. possible with reserved seating tickets available for $15.....
Saxophone great Ernie Watts first came to fame in the ‘60s as a featured soloist with the Buddy Rich band. His next stop was Motown where he recorded on more than 200 projects including several hits with Marvin Gaye. A move to Los Angeles in the ‘70s landed Watts a regular spot in Johnny Carson's Tonight Show band. His long and varied recording career has also included featured solos with hundreds of top artists including the Rolling Stones, Quincy Jones, Thelonius Monk and Frank Zappa, to name a few.
Watts will be featured on several selections with the 25-piece big band including a few pieces that were written especially for him. The song "Elkhart" is based on the ‘30s favorite "Back Home in Indiana," a beautiful melodic waltz is titled "Blue Daniel," and Tommy Newsom, the assistant director of the Tonight Show band, wrote sax feature arrangements of the ballads "God Bless the Child" and "Body and Soul."
In addition to the regular members, the college jazz band will be augmented with a few extra guests including jazz trumpeter Dan Maas, lead trumpeter Marvin McFadden (of Huey Lewis and the News), and jazz trombone soloist Ken Taylor.
Reserved seating tickets are available from the Mountain Bookshop at The Junction shopping center and at the college Manzanita Bookstore. Tickets by phone are available at 588-5126. Remaining seats will be available at the door. For jazz series information call 588-5211.
