Something New on ThePineTree.net....Weekly Summaries of Stanislaus and Eldorado Forests Enforcement Incidents ~ From Jay Harlie Power, Patrol Captain, Stanislaus National Forest

ThePineTree.net will now be providing weekly summaries of the Stanislaus and Eldorado Forests Enforcement Incidents. We would like to thank Captain Power for letting us pass along these reports! See Current Reports Enclosed....

Stanislaus

On March 7, 2009, 2 Summit FPO's, who were beginning an over-snow patrol at the Highway 108 Sno-Park on the Summit District, were told by a citizen that a cabin at the Brightman Tract had burned down 2 nights previously. The FPO's traveled to the site via snomachine and observed that Cabin #6 had burned to the ground. The burned off end of the propane line was burning like a torch. Cal Fire will investigate the cause of the fire.

On March 8, 2009, two Groveland RD LEO’s contacted three juveniles target shooting in a road. The juveniles had positioned themselves in a manner that left them shooting down the road at oncoming traffic. The parents were found down the road and were informed of the incident. Later, while questioning the oldest juvenile, LEOs noticed that he kept trying to put his hands in his pockets. He was frisked and a marijuana pipe was found in his pocket. He was cited and released. It is unknown if he survived the ride home with his irate mother.

On March 9, 2009, a Groveland LEO and a SA were passed by a fast moving vehicle on a mountain road. The vehicle was stopped and the driver questioned. The driver and two of three passengers admitted to drinking, although the driver appeared to be well below the legal limit. The driver was cited for reckless driving and a passenger was cited for possession of marijuana. The sober passenger volunteered to drive the vehicle.

El Dorado

On March 11, 2009, an Amador RD LEO responded to assist Amador County SO in the evacuation of an elderly female from a residential structure fire. Once on scene the Deputy and LEO assisted a wheelchair bound female into a waiting vehicle. The Deputy and LEO then did a quick search of the residence for additional people. The Deputy and LEO determined that there were no more individuals inside the residence and evacuated.

STANISLAUS
On March 13, 2009, an LEO on the Miwok District attempted to stop a vehicle under suspicion of having an open container of alcohol. The driver failed to yield. Another LEO drove up the road to assist. When the driver’s driving became erratic, the first LEO backed off the vehicle and lost him in the dense vegetation. The second LEO caught the vehicle as it doubled-back down the trail after the 1st LEO passed by. The driver left the vehicle and fled on foot into the woods. A female passenger and her three children were left in the vehicle. LEOs developed a suspect and the investigation continues.

On March 14, 2009, LEOs on the Groveland District found a group of youths in their teens and early twenties having a party near a popular area off a county road. LEOs found alcohol, marijuana, and multiple weapons violations. All occupants were cited. The following day, a LEO and a CA DFG Warden arrived at the same site and found a different group of individuals that were cited for alcohol, marijuana, and OHV violations.

On March 18, 2009, an Air National Guard Pavehawk helicopter from the 129th Rescue Squadron out of Moffet Field assisted the Stanislaus Forest with the clean up of a marijuana garden on the Miwok District. The Pavehawk hoisted 6 USFS LEOs from the Stanislaus, Sequoia, Eldorado and Tahoe National Forest who then gathered debris and placed it in nets. The Pavehawk then used a long-line to lift out 1200 lbs. of debris and equipment from a very large garden. The FS helicopter manager estimates that this represents 20 % of the total debris in the garden. A later mission will remove the remaining garbage.

On March 23, 2009, Camp Tawonga on the Groveland District reported to the Tuolumne SO at 1700 that 2 of their staff had left at 9 that morning to go to Sonora and had not arrived at their destination. A deputy looked on some of the FS roads late on 3/23. On 3/24 a ground search was begun with USFS LEOs, Tuolumne SO deputies and NPS units from Yosemite Park. At 0900, one of the men walked out to the Early Intake Hetch Hetchy facility and reported that they had spent the night stuck in the snow on a FS road in their 2 WD truck. At around 1400 a NPS unit located the other man and his truck.

On March 25, 2009, the wife of a missing man reported him overdue in the American Camp area of Miwok District. He was re-conning the area on 3/24 for upcoming turkey season. A Miwok LEO located the man at Italian Bar where he was working on his vehicle. He had spent the night on the Italian Bar road when his vehicle would not start.

STANISLAUS

On March 25, 2009, an FPO on the Groveland district was conducting surveys off of 1S21Y when he heard shots. The FPO drove up the road and noticed six teenagers on the side of road with a rifle. The FPO asked who was shooting across the road. Male teenagers admitted to shooting across the road. The FPO issued a warning and educated five other teenagers.

On March 28, 2009, a LEO and an Agent were working the southern end of the Groveland district, when a report of a drunk bloody male had been seen at the Tuolumne South Fork campground, in the Lumsden Rd. area. The male told the reporting party that he did not need any help. The reporting party also reported hearing shots in the area. Tuolumne county sheriff department responded a deputy and a CHP officer to the remote river canyon location. The deputy found multiple males at the location including one bloody male and one male missing in the woods. The two FS officers arrived on scene just behind the last deputy who arrived on scene; forty-five minutes after the incident had been reported. They found four males being detained in the patrol cars and one being questioned. The sixth and final male was found down a trail, sleeping along side of a trail. He had a bloody beat up face; he was also extremely in intoxicated. CHP arrested one male for DUI. The Sheriff Deputies arrested four of the six males for drunk in public and a parole violation. The least intoxicated male was left at the camp site. Two of the males were issued federal violations, one for possession of marijuana and the second was sited for possession of marijuana and discharging a 44 mag into the air, a tree, and the ground, inside of a camp ground,. A 22 cal. rifle, a 44 mag. Revolver, and a 380 hand gun were seized by the Sheriff Deputies.

On March 28, 2009, two FPO's from the Calaveras district conducted an over-snow patrol to detect possible intrusion of motorized snow machines into the Carson Iceberg Wilderness area. At approximately 1215hrs, they were staged along a ridge where they could view the Wilderness. One FPO observed 3 snowmobilers below Hiram Peak high marking in the Wilderness. The FPO's stopped the 3 snowmobilers inside the Wilderness. The Snowmobilers stated they had been in the area before and did see the wilderness boundary sign, but failed to ever read them. All 3 men were cited for operating a motorized vehicle in a Wilderness area and escorted out of the Carson Iceberg Wilderness.

EL DORADO

On March 29, 2009, two LEO’s from the Placerville district observed a vehicle with expired registration. After confirming the registration, the passengers were asked if they had anything else in their possession. They had marijuana, rum, and 2 handguns. Both occupants were under 21 years of age. They were charged with minor possession for the handgun and ammunition and possession and transportation of marijuana.
