Changes are Coming to Human Resources Council… in Calaveras and in Amador. New name; new facilities; new and expanded Food Bank – to better support residents and to better reflect programs, direction, and vision

San Andreas, CA...Like other parts of the state and nation, residents throughout the Foothills are facing difficult challenges resulting from unprecedented economic setbacks. Access to nutritious food, identification of quality child care, and availability of support during times of crisis are more and more critical – just as funding is more and more difficult to secure. Many communities are being forced to reduce services and programs...

In the midst of such challenging times, the Human Resources Council is fortunate to have something to celebrate with its community: a new Food Bank in San Andreas, new facilities in Sutter Creek, and a new name and mission statement for the organization.

“We have much to be thankful for. Although we are facing the same problems that other social service organizations across the state are facing, we are excited to be able to share some good news. The generosity of our community and the hard work of our staff have enabled us to build this great new Food Bank which can serve as a center for nutrition and well-being for the people of Calaveras County. It took many years, but we made it!” explained Shirley Stroble, HRC Board Chairperson.

Construction of the Food Bank began in 2007, although the organization began talking about it in 2002. The 5,300 sq ft building will signal a new era for HRC – building on the strength of nearly 30 years of programs and services in the community. Funding for the Food Bank came from Community Development Block Grants, Housing and Community Development, US Department of Agriculture, and generous private donors.

But the Food Bank is not the only change being ushered in by HRC.

In 2009, with over a year of extensive strategic planning efforts to revisit the role they had been playing in Amador and Calaveras counties, the board recognized the importance of better articulating its vision and goals. Armed with information about the impact the programs were having on families and communities and the reality that its name, Human Resources Council, no longer reflected its mission and philosophy – the board embraced two big changes: a new name and a new mission statement.

Human Resources Council is now The Resource Connection, an organization that engages families, empowers communities, and enriches the lives of the residents of Amador and Calaveras counties.

“We changed our name from HRC to The Resource Connection because we want the community to better understand what we do. We clarified our mission statement because we want everyone to understand our philosophy and purpose. But despite these changes, we remain deeply committed to the communities of Amador and Calaveras counties,” said Catherine Bourland, Executive Director and one of the founders of the organization.

Board members hope the recent changes will broaden the organization’s capacity to reach more residents who can benefit from the knowledge and experience of the organization.

“Many people don’t realize the extent of the programs and the many ways that our services impact the communities of Amador County,” proclaimed Mel Welsh, Board Member. “While the Food Bank is located in Calaveras County, numerous other programs, including many focused on nutrition, crisis intervention, and child care are offered throughout Amador.”

Each year thousands of residents are supported through programs that focus on children and families, nutrition, and prevention and intervention. With these new developments, the Resource Connection is prepared to continue its work and to create new and innovative partnerships and programs that reflect local needs and local resources.

The Resource Connection, formerly Human Resources Council (HRC) is a 29-year-old Amador and Calaveras based nonprofit organization providing services and programs in three critical areas: children and families, nutrition, and prevention and intervention. The Resource Connection is governed by a volunteer board of directors and staffed by 170 employees at 16 sites throughout the two counties.
