Bear Valley, CA...Bear Valley Cross Country played host to the 36th Annual Bjornloppet (Bear Race is the rough translation). There were 10k and 20k events on the beautiful, world class Bear Valley Meadow course. The 20k on Saturday and the 10k on Sunday were taken by Peter Mayfield with local Bear Valley racer and last year's winner Scott Fairman crossing in the second spot both days. Guy Schuman slid into first place in the 10k on Saturday with the flying female, 13 year old, Junior Olympic Bound, Raylene Chew sped into the second overall position. The weather was perfect and the times were fast. The Bjornloppet is a great race for anyone who wants to experience what cross country skiing is about....
There were the serious athletes at the top of the field and some very competitive times. There were also some skiers in the race who were strapping on their sticks for the first time all season. Bear Valley Cross Country's Paul Peterson said that this race is a homecoming of sorts for lots of current and former Bear Valleyites and other Ebbetts Pass locals and visitors.
After the races all of the entrants and their friends partied down at Sky High Pizza in the Bear Valley Village. If you missed the Bjornloppet and would like to try your hand at the Cardio side of skiing they are having another race called the "Tom's Race" 10K Classic Annual spring "striding only" fun race on Saturday April 4, 2009
Blacksheep Photos was onhand the took some great shots of the competitors. They have a full gallery at http://www.blacksheepphotos.com and the login to view them is bjornloppet
Remember that Bear Valley Cross Country during the winter also offers Sledding, Tubing and Snowshoeing. It is also home to the only gas station in town.
After the season Bear Valley Cross Country morphs into the Bear Valley Adventure Company with Kayaking and Mountain Biking rentals and sales.
