New Melones Fishing Report for February 26th, 2009 and Sunday Seminar Schedule~By Glory Hole Sports

Fishing Report shores...Trout: The Department of Fish and Game will be planting Melones again this week. Fishing from the bank, or still-fishing from your boat will catch the most fish. Bruce Shores of Modesto wins Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest and a free deli lunch with a 2.2-pound brown trout that he caught on a garlic marshmallow while bank-fishing off of Glory Hole Point. Mel Taguinod of Rio Vista caught a limit of rainbows on pink Power Bait while fishing in the same area. 12-year-old Daniel Ernster of Sonora threw silver/blue Kastmasters to catch a limit of .....

rainbows while still-fishing from a boat in creek arms. Use rainbow, pink, or chartreuse glitter Power Bait or a marshmallow/crawler combo (be sure your bait is floating off the bottom and not in the silt). Lures have been working surprisingly well- throw a gold or silver/blue or silver/chartreuse Kastmaster, or a yellow or rainbow trout Roostertail. If you have a Second-Rod Stamp, throw a line out with bait, and then cast a lure- double your chances! Fishing with a live minnow under a bobber either while still-fishing from your boat or bank fishing is also working. Trolling: Trout are chasing shad in the creek arms, such as Mormon Creek or Carson Creek. Follow the shad to locate the fish. If you have a boat, try trolling or still-fishing in those areas, but still-fishing will probably get you more fish. Trollers- keep your bait on the surface in the early morning, up to 15 feet deep when the sun is out (deeper if you are targeting browns). Use no flashers, or use ball-troll flashers. Be sure to have plenty of line out behind your boat, or better yet, use side planers to move your lure away from your boat's wake. Best lures for trollers have been gold, silver, or shad patterned lures such as a Rapala, Rebel, Kastmaster or Needlefish. Rolling shad or trolling a broken-back Rapala or Rebel is the best way to catch brown trout. Browns tend to hide in structure near deep water, so troll near submerged trees or steep drop-offs such as rock walls in the river channel. Remember- we want to see your catch! Be sure to stop by the store so we can take your picture! We will give you a copy, and post it on the Internet on our web site, as well. The limit of salmonids (trout and kokanee) at New Melones is 5 per day, 5 in possession.

Kokanee: Done for the season. Usually starts getting good again in March-April, when the water starts to warm up. People are still catching a kokanee here and there, though.

Bass: picking up. Biggest fish are being caught on spinnerbaits along the banks up to 30 feet deep. There have been quite a few big spotted bass caught that were in the 4-6 pound range- the spotted bass seem close to spawning, and are in shallower water. Most numbers of bass can be caught by dragging a drop-shot-rigged or split-shot rigged 4" shad-colored or oxblood worm on secondary points or submerged island tops, or by vertical spooning with a Hopkins Spoon under bait balls. Swim bait and reaction-type baits are working, especially on windy days. Bass Federation held a tournament on Melones last weekend. Deacon Fernandes took first place with 11.49 pounds. His biggest fish was 4.53-pounds. The biggest fish of the tournament was caught by Mac McCullough, and weighed 6.17-pounds. Please gently release any bass that you catch. Remember- the Department of Fish and Game does not plant bass, so it is up to us to maintain our bass fishery.

Catfish: slow. Use anchovies, mackerel, sardines, chicken liver, or a ball of nightcrawlers. Leave your bail open so the cats can pick the bait up and swim with it- you will be more likely to hook them that way. Be sure to use a sliding sinker weight. McCoy's McStoppers are great for keeping the sinker off the bait without messing around with a swivel, or splitshot that can damage your line. Tuttletown, Glory Hole Point, and near the Visitors' Center are all good places to bank-fish for big cats.

Crappie and bluegill: Night fishing under a light is best. Crappie can be found hanging out in submerged trees, about 10'-30' feet deep. Bear Creek, Mormon Creek and Carson Creek are all good bets. For crappie, try fishing live small or medium minnows, or crappie jigs with jigs in red/white, black/chartreuse or purple/white. Remember- 25 is the limit for crappie.

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,187,920 acre-feet of water. Water level has been coming up fairly quickly the last few weeks. It rose one foot this week, and is at 967 ft. above sea level and 121 ft. from full capacity. Water in the main lake is approximately 50-52 degrees. Water is gin clear. Huge schools of 5" shad are plentiful.

Glory Hole Sports Sunday Fishing Seminar Series

Glory Hole Sports has put together a great line-up of free seminars on fishing for 2009. The seminars will be held at Glory Hole Sports at 3 p.m. on specific Sundays. There are many great fishing opportunities available to anglers in our area- this is your opportunity to learn how to improve your fishing success.

Various professional anglers will give a one-to-two hour lesson on their specialty, at the right time of year for the type of fishing they will be talking about, so you will be able to take the knowledge and head right out to the water to use it.

In addition, there will be on-the-water downrigger-use lessons, and on-the-water bass fishing lessons, and maybe even an on-the-water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing lesson. There will be a small fee for these lessons, to cover expenses. Sign-ups start now!

Glory Hole Sports usually hosts a big one-day seminar at the fairgrounds each year, which is attended by hundreds of anglers. However, there was never enough time to talk about more than a few kinds of fishing. The smaller, in-store seminars allow for a greater variety of subjects, and will allow for more personal one-on-one interaction with the pros.

There will be free goodies at many of the seminars, and a raffle will be held after each seminar. Attendees will receive one free raffle ticket for attending, and can earn more tickets by making purchases on seminar day- one raffle ticket per $25 spent. There will be some great prizes, so you will want to get in on the raffle!

In addition, there will be great deals on items in the store that pertain to each seminar, and hot dogs will be $1.

We will also be having a raffle for some major prizes, such as guide trips and merchandise. Every time you spend $50 or more in merchandise inside the store (excluding fuel and fishing licenses), ask for a receipt. Write your name and number on the receipt, and ask the cashier to put it in the box. On June 20th, we will draw names and give away the prizes. You don’t need to be present to win- we will call you.

For further information, please call Glory Hole Sports at (209) 736-4333.
