Sobering News from the County ~By John Hamilton

San Andreas, CA...In what was the most sobering portion of the Board of Supervisors meeting was a presentation by Assistant Administrative Officer Shirley Ryan. It portrayed the draconian cuts that will be necessary it the State Budget is not passes soon. Health and Human services for the county would see an almost $3,000,000 shortfall in the first seven months. This would necessitate an almost 40% reduction in staff and other services. Public Works and road maintenance funds would also severely hit. Shirley painted a picture that our county would be unable to solve locally if the impasse continues to drag on. The cuts....

would first impact the residents and sections of our economy that could least afford it.

The only real solution is Sacramento getting a budget passed. Another interesting note was that most counties run with about 30 days of available cash and the unanswered question was obvious was that if the state does not complete it's work soon the layoffs and furloughs at many counties in the state will start coming fast and furiously is something is not done and done quickly.
