Some Friendly Competition~ by Andrea Silva
Copperopolis, CA....Rainy Skies, Slick Streets and an Icy Winds could not discourage Marathon Runners this weekend at the annual “Copper Run” held at Black Creek Park in Copperopolis, CA. While conditions may have been less than ideal for a ½ mile, 2 mile or 10k trek through the oak lined streets of Copper Cove, marathoners still managed to turn in incredibly low run times with surprisingly high spirits....
Friendly Competition was the theme of the day for five friends from Sonora High School as they bounded off the start line, joking, teasing and taunting one another. Ned Klein, Nick Klein, Kody Walton, Jonathan Smith, and Jeramiah Williams of Sonora took top honors in the 10k race placing 1st through 5th, respectively, in their age group. They also garnered top spots in the overall standings. While the fab-five are no strangers to competitions (they are all members of the Sonora High Cross Country Team) today marked their first Marathon outside of school. When asked how he felt about today’s run, Kody Walton said “I was feeling really good about it until I got passed by a 60 year old man”.
Adele Jackson participated with her daughter Lily and their two dogs Leo and Daisy. Lily Jackson, a student at the Copperopolis Elementary School, won second place, in her age group, for the 2 mile race while her mother claimed humorously “This is my first year moving in the race, I didn’t run, I walked most of the race just in case any other runners fell over and needed first aid”. While there wasn’t any need for first aid, one out-of-breath teacher, Sara Tutthill gasped “I need a sub” several times as she crossed the finish line, referring to getting a substitute teacher to run in her place.
Gigi Young said elementary students plan weeks in advance for the run it “Starts with a t-shirt competition, and the kids get really excited about it”. The children are asked to come up with an artistic design for the event that will be printed on t-shirts and then worn by the contestants. This year’s winner was 6th grader Chase Stamer who created a colorful abstract take on runners traversing little bits of road with the words “run, run, run” under each of them.
The race is intended to promote Health and Fitness at the School, while raising money for the Copperopolis Elementary School and the Copperopolis Volunteer Fire Department, who jointly coordinate the event each year.
