Deputy Assaulted in Sonora

Sonora, CA....On 01/17/09, at approximately 3:00 PM, Corporal Mark Kerzich was on duty in uniform and driving a marked patrol vehicle. While waiting at the Stop light at Hwy 108 and Washington Street (Sonora CA), a male subject, later identified as Kevin Oneal Hepstall, got out of his car an approached Kerich’s patrol vehicle. Hepstall approached the driver’s side in a very agitated and argumentative state. Cpl. Kerzich ordered Hepstall away from his patrol .....

vehicle. Kerzich had exited his patrol vehicle and instructed Hepstall to go back to his own car. Hepstall refused and threatened to harm Cpl. Kerzich. Hepstall lunged at Cpl. Kerzich and struck him in the head. Cpl. Kerzich attempted to distance himself from Hepstall. Kerzich used his baton to gain control of Hepstall. By this time both Hepstall and Kerzich were in the westbound lanes of Hwy 108, amongst the traffic. Cpl. Kerzich was able to gain control of Hepstall with the assistance of a few motorist who stopped and help. Hepstall was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center. Kerzich also sought medical attention for his injuries.

Once Hepstall was cleared at the hospital, he was transported to Jail and booked for Felony battery on a Peace Officer. His bail is set at $30,000.00.
