“Wildfire Awareness Week” Declared in California

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/08/2017 12:07 PM
Sacramento, CA...California’s wet winter fueled the growth of a significant grass crop. The abundant grass will soon dry into tinder. Now is the time to act to prevent wildfires. Today Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. declared May 7-13 “Wildfire Awareness Week” to urge homeowners to prepare now for the dry, flammable season ahead. Already this year CAL FIRE has responded to more than 400 wildfires that have burned over 7,000 acres. This year’s thick crop of grass and brush contrasts with the meager growth of the drought years of 2012 through 2015. CAL FIRE urges residents to remove excess vegetation around homes and maintain 100 feet of defensible space to increase the odds that the structure will survive a wildfire.

Arnold, CA...Yesterday marked an end of an era for the Ebbetts Pass Fire District. Battalion Chief Brian Hukkanen worked his last shift at EPFD Station One. He has retired after a 37 year career of helping our community. He started as a 15 year old cadet and has been with EPFD since 1979. After thousands of calls for fires, vehicle collisions, medical aids and more Battalion Chief Hukkanen will be moving on to a new phase in his life.
