|
Sonora, CA...The Summit Ranger District on the Stanislaus National Forest experienced multiple lightning strikes last weekend, resulting in more than 20 new single-tree fires. The weather forecast for the Forest calls for thunderstorms producing lightning strikes through Wednesday and significant high temperatures through the weekend.
A single-tree fire occurs when lightning strikes and ignites a single tree, which sometimes produces little or no fire activity around it. Six of these new fire starts are in the Emigrant Wilderness. The attached map shows the lightning strikes on the Forest for the previous 24 hours, as of 9:15 a.m. today.

Thank You Firefighters For Great Work on Angels Camp Fire!! ~ Bob Diehl |
Posted by: thepinetree on 08/18/2017 02:50 PM
|
Angels Camp, CA...On Sunday, August 12 a grass fire broke out in a vacant lot near our home in old town Angels Camp, above Utica Park. As fire newbies, we were pretty scared. The flames were over six feet high and the crackling could be heard inside our house even though all the windows were closed. Our local firefighters were there on the spot, and prevented any damage to the homes nearby. Thank you all for your quick work and professionalism—we’re lucky to have you! ~Bob

The fire continues to slowly spread to the northeast into the Yosemite Wilderness. Air resources will continue to assist the firefighting effort today as smoke levels allow. Direct line construction was tied into Wawona Dome on the west flank. Burning operations may begin today to allow for the protection of the Wawona community and the Mariposa Sequoia Grove.
