05:30 PM - 08:30 PM Taxpayers Association Annual Luau
Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA), will discuss “Taxpayer Advocacy in Times of Economic Crisis” at a Calaveras County Taxpayers Association fundraiser on Thursday, August 20th. The event will be held at Moaning Cavern Park in Vallecito. There will be cavern tours and zip line rides available between 5 and 6 PM.

Coupal, an attorney who successfully argued the term limits Proposition 140 before the California Supreme Court has been HJTA president since 1999. Prior to that he served as the organization’s Director of Legal Affairs. He is the principal author of Proposition 218, the Right to Vote on Taxes Act, which was approved by voters in 1996.

HJTA is a statewide organization founded by Proposition 13 coauthor Howard Jarvis. Its mission is the protection of Proposition 13 and the advancements of taxpayers’ rights. The Association takes an active role in state tax policy, and was instrumental in the defeat of several propositions seeking tax increases including the recent Propositions 1A thru E.

Coupal said “These are some of the most trying times for taxpayers since the Great Depression. It is critical that organizations such as Calaveras Taxpayers Association remain both vigilant and active in protecting the interests of those who pay taxes to the state and local governments.”

Also, a panel including Bob Lawton, County CAO, Leslie Davis, Acting Assessor, Lynn Norfork, Tax Collector and Linda Churches, Auditor/Controller, will be giving short reports and answering questions.

The event will begin at 5:30 with a no host bar. Entertainment will be provided by musician Jay Grimstead and jugglers Mountain Mischief. At 6:00 a delicious LUAU dinner will be served by the award winning Ken Churches Catering. Ken is also our county Farm Advisor.

Seating is limited. Tickets are $18, which includes dinner. A package deal includes 2 dinner tickets and 2 zip lines for $80. On-line reservations are available until August 13th at the CCTA website: www.CalaverasTaxpayers.org. Or, call 209-785-1491.
