High COVID-19 Transmission in Amador County

Amador County, CA – Amador County Public Health reports 80 more cases of COVID-19 since last Tuesday’s update, bringing the total laboratory confirmed case count to 2,038. The current cases include 38 males and 42 females, 11 children under the age of 18 years, 41 aged 18-49, 14 aged 50-64, 14 age 65 and above; 22 residing in Ione, 20 in Jackson, 5 living in Plymouth/surrounding areas, 10 in Pine Grove, 7 residing in Pioneer, 14 in Sutter Creek/Amador City, and 2 in residing in Volcano. 804 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in 2021 to date. Of the new cases this week, 18 were vaccinated.

18 Year Old Pioneer Man Loses His Life in Fatal Collision on Shakeridge Road

Pioneer, CA...The driver of the Chevrolet was eastbound Shakeridge Road, west of Evergreen Way at a high rate of speed, while evading an Amador County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) vehicle, displaying lights and siren as required by the California Vehicle Code. The driver of the Chevrolet allowed the vehicle to leave the roadway along the south roadway edge and entered the soft dirt shoulder. Snyder was driving his Toyota westbound on Shakeridge Road, west of Evergreen Way, approaching the Chevrolet. Snyder observed the Chevrolet re-enter the roadway and proceed into the westbound lane, directly into the path of the Toyota. Snyder veered his Toyota to the left to avoid a head on collision. As the Chevrolet continued out of control, unknown debris flew from the Chevrolet and collided with the Toyota. The Chevrolet subsequently collided into a tree and immediately became engulfed in flames.

Markleeville, CA...Special Notes: Residents returning to their homes following evacuations should be aware that there may still be fire activity nearby. Smoke and possible isolated flare-ups may occur for several weeks within the fire area as the fire burns through isolated fuels such as dead or downed trees. There is still firefighting work being done in many areas. Use caution on roadways, as firefighting vehicles will also be sharing the roads.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care Rescues Black Bear Cub from The Tamarack Fire

Markleeville, CA....Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care contacted Alpine County on Sunday evening (7/25/21) after receiving a report from a Markleeville resident regarding an injured black bear cub in the Markleeville area. The injuries to the animal were a result of the Tamarack Fire and the mother bear could not be located. As a result, the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care staff successfully located and transported the bear to their facility in South Lake Tahoe. Currently, the bear cub is recovering and will remain under the care of LTWC until it has been fully rehabilitated.

Traffic Update....Hwy 88 Reopens Through Tamarack Fire Area, Other Closures Remain

South Lake Tahoe, CA...The SR-88 is open unless a significant change in fire behavior occurs. The closure at Ebbetts Pass on SR-4, Woodfords at SR-88, and Diamond Valley and at SR-88 remain closed. The fourth closure will be at the SR-89 and SR-4 to prevent access to Ebbetts Pass or Monitor Pass.

No Campfires – Increased Fire Restrictions Begin Monday on the Eldorado National Forest

Placerville, CA...With record breaking drought conditions causing extremely low fuel moistures, the Eldorado National Forest is increasing its fire restrictions to a forestwide campfire ban, beginning Monday, July 26, 2021. No wood or charcoal fires will be allowed anywhere in the forest under these new restrictions. The restrictions apply to all campgrounds, developed sites, and special use permits.

Tamarack Fire July 22 Morning Update. 50,129 Acres, 4% Containment, 1,213 Personnel on Fire

Markleeville, CA...The Tamarack Fire started as a lightning strike in the Mokelumne Wilderness on a rocky ridgetop with sparse fuels and natural barriers to fire spread. Friday, July 16 high winds caused rapid downslope fire spread. With this change in the fire, resources were quickly dispatched to the site. Additional resources were ordered, including very Large Air Tankers (VLAT), Single Engine Airtankers (SEATS) and helicopters.
